So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Change Launchpad Icon Grid Layout in Mac OS X.

Launchpad is the quick application launcher available through the Mac OS X Dock and a keystroke quite similar to the iOS home screen. By default, the Launchpad app grid usually displays icons in 7 rows and 5 columns of apps, but with a little tweak from OS X’s command line, you can switch and adjust the Launchpad icon grid to any number of apps you want to see on the Mac.

This uses the command line and default strings to customize the Launchpad grid layout. If you’re not comfortable with Terminal, you’d probably better leave it alone and enjoy the default Launchpad app icon grid. We’ll first combine the commands into a single syntax string for ease of use, but you can take them apart as we’ll show you later.

How to Adjust the Launchpad Icon Grid Count in Mac OS X.

  1. Open the Terminal in / Applications / Utilities / and enter the following command syntax, substituting the X numbers for the appropriate columns and the number of grid icons
  2. defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int X; defaults write com.apple.dock springboard rows -int X; defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE; killall Dock

For example, to set the Launchpad grid to 3 × 5, use the following syntax: defaults write com.apple.dock springboard columns -int 5; defaults write com.apple.dock springboard rows -int 3; defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE; killall Dock

  3. Hit Return and wait for the Dock and Launchpad to refresh
  4. Open Launchpad as usual to watch the layout change

Settings change immediately after the Dock is refreshed:

If you want to go back to the default, just change the column and row counts to what yours was originally. The default screen on my MacBook Pro Retina display is a 5×7 grid, but yours may vary depending on the screen size and screen resolution.

default settings write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int 7; defaults write com.apple.dock springboard rows -int 5; defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE; killall Dock

Customize the layout of the Launchpad grid icon

The commands for customizing the Launchpad layout can also be broken down as follows, if desired:

Set the number of columns in Launchpad

defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int 3

Set the number of Launchpad Row App icons

defaults write com.apple.dock springboard rows -int 4

Reset Launchpad

defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE;

Restart the Dock with Killall

killall Dock

You can also choose to set just a custom row or just a custom number of columns, but you’ll have to reset and refresh the Launchpad, and eventually kill the Dock to restart the Dock in Mac OS X and make the changes through to let it go no matter how you adjust it.
