Change Login Screen Wallpaper on OS Lion

Check tutorial of Change the Login Screen Wallpaper in OS X Lion

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Change the Login Screen Wallpaper in OS X Lion.

NOTE: New instructions are available to change the login screen background image in OS X Mavericks. Refer to this one if you want to customize the login background in the latest versions of OS X.

Here is how to change the background that is behind the default login screen on OS X Lion & Mountain Lion (although you won’t see the login background when FileVault is enabled, which cannot be changed). As such, this tweak is not for the faint of heart as it involves editing system files and therefore will affect all users of the system. Previous tips here at OSXDaily how to change the login screen background in earlier versions of OS X, but OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion changed everything (again).

For OS X Lion & Mountain Lion, the file we need to replace is called NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png and is located at:

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/

As with the Mission Control and Dashboard wallpapers, the login screen background is actually a pattern that repeats from left to right, top to bottom. You can replace it with a similar pattern of the same size (256 x 256 pixels) or use a full size image with exactly the same resolution as your monitor.

Note that because the white text and images of the login screen are overlaid on the background, dark backgrounds usually work better than light ones.

How to Replace the login screen background in Mac OS X Lion

  1. Open the image you want to use for the background in Preview and convert it to PNG format by clicking File -> Export. In the dialog box that appears, select PNG from the Format drop-down list and change the file name so that it reads “NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png”.
  2. Back up the original background image by opening a Finder window and pressing Shift + Command + G and type the following path:
  3. /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/

  4. Now copy the file “NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png” to a safe backup location.
  5. Then click and drag your new image into the Finder window so that the original is overwritten. You will be asked to verify, so click on it button in the dialog box that appears and type your login password when prompted. Choose to replace the original file when prompted.

That’s all it takes, but you’ll need to restart your computer for the change to take effect.

If you find that the background pattern is shrinking and repeating on the login screen instead of filling it, try using an image editor to create a new image with the same resolution as your screen (e.g. 1280 x 800), then open your background image before copying and pasting it into the new image. Then save the new image in the previously mentioned location with the filename listed.

To revert to the default login background, repeat the steps above to scroll back to:

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/

And put your backupup “NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png” image back in place.
