Check tutorial of Change the Notification Center Background Pattern in Mac OS X

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Change the Notification Center Background Pattern in Mac OS X.

Tired of seeing that linen wallpaper in the background of the OS X Notification Center? You can change that linen pattern to something else, giving the notification panel a nice custom look when checking alerts on the Mac. There are actually two ways to switch the Notifications background: the more difficult manual way via the command line, and the easy way using a free third-party tool called Mountain Tweaks. We’ll cover both, but we generally recommend the easy MountainTweaks method because it’s faster and remarkably easy. The end result of both methods is a custom notification background in OS X:

Let’s start.

Change notification center wallpaper the easy way

Before you start, you will need:

  • OS X 10.8 or later
  • Mountain Tweaks – Download it here for free (click on the little blue “here” link at the bottom of the page)
  • A dark repeating wallpaper pattern – SubtlePatterns is a good place to start

Technically, the replacement background image could be lighter, but you will find that notifications are very difficult to read. Also, it doesn’t have to be a repeating pattern, although it looks much better when using a tile image as it repeats if the screen size is larger than the pattern.

Once you’ve downloaded MountainTweaks, unzip it and throw it in your / Applications / folder, it’s a handy app to have and basically serves as a simple front-end for many of the basic writing commands we’ve discussed before. When you have a nice replacement cartridge ready, you are good to go:

  • Open MountainTweaks and choose the tab “Mountain Lion”
  • Look for the option “Change Notification Center Background” and long click “Yes” (for some reason a normal click didn’t work, but YMMV)
  • Select your new background pattern and click “Choose”
  • Enter the admin password to confirm the changes

Change the notification center background with MountainTweaks

That’s about it, slide open Notification Center and check the new background image. In this example, we’ve chosen a fairly obvious replacement for red tiles:

Custom Background Image Message Center

Return to the default value

Do you hate the new look? It’s very easy to undo:

  • Open MountainTweaks again and long press “NO” button next to ‘Change the notification center background’
  • Enter the admin password again to confirm the changes

This will bring the original linen image back to the Notifications background, slide it open to confirm everything is back to normal.

Manually change the notification center background

This is aimed more at advanced users who are familiar with the Terminal. Even if you’re a command line buff, it’s still easier to use the automated MountainTweaks approach outlined above. Nonetheless, many of us just want to know how things work and where things are, so here is how to manually change the background for notifications.

1: Find a pattern and convert it to TIFFFind a suitable pattern replacement, open it in the Preview app and save it as a TIFF image named “linen.tiff” on the desktop – this is important as the replaced file must be converted to a tiff file with the same filename to work properly.

2: back upup from the original linen fileLaunch Terminal and enter the following command string, this will copy the ‘linen.tiff’ file to your documents folder and use it as a backupup serve. The command is deliberately overly elaborated to avoid accidents:

sudo cp -R / System / Library / CoreServices / Notification Center.app/Contents/Resources/linen.tiff ~ / Documents / linen.tiff

Since this uses sudo, you will probably need to enter the administrator password.

3: Replace the original linen with a new cartridgeAssuming your new ‘linen.tiff’ file is still on the desktop, use the following command to copy it over the

sudo cp ~ / linen.tiff / System / Library / CoreServices / Notification Center.app/Contents/Resources/linen.tiff

Now kill everything for the changes to take effect:

killall NotificationCenter; killall SystemUIServer

Slide open the Notification Center to see your new pattern.

If you want to manually revert the change, just replace the replaced linen.tiff file with the backupup up linen.tiff and kill NotificationCenter again.

Want to tweak the notification center a bit more? You can also change the alert sound to something else.
