Check tutorial of How to Check if Applications are Incompatible with Mac OS X Lion

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Check if Applications are Incompatible with Mac OS X Lion.

You may know by now that OS X Lion is dropping support for Rosetta, which means old PowerPC apps will no longer run in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

List the installed apps that are not compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion

For incompatible applications, look for the “PowerPC” designation only. This is the easiest way to get a list of these installed on your Mac:

  • Launch System Profiler (from Spotlight or hold Option> Apple menu> System Profiler)
  • Find the “Software” menu on the left Content List
  • Click on “Applications”
  • Click “Kind” to sort your installed applications by architecture type, scroll through the list until you see “PowerPC”

Anything listed as “PowerPC” will not work in Lion 10.7. Intel and Universal apps work fine.

If you’re completely dependent on one of these PPC apps, you may want to try a dual boot OS X 10.6 and 10.7 setup, or skip upgrading to Lion until a Lion compatible version of that app is available.

If you look in System Profiler and none of your apps are listed as PowerPC, you shouldn’t have any compatibility issues. You can check out Mac OS X Lion’s broader system requirements if you haven’t already, but other than requiring a 64-bit processor, they’re pretty mild.

Here’s an older screenshot of many PowerPC apps, if you see something like this and you’re using all the apps, you wouldn’t want to upgrade to Lion without knowing if there are any newer versions:PPC appsYou can also check if actively running apps are PowerPC by using Activity Monitor.
