Check tutorial of How to Compress Video on iPhone or iPad
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Compress Video on iPhone or iPad.
The iPhone and iPad can record amazing high-definition video in 4K, 1080p, and 720p resolution, and while those movies look great, they also create large file sizes. While you can always change the recording resolution of video in iOS in advance, another option is to compress video afterwards, which reduces the file size dramatically. Compressing video is especially useful if you want to share a video from an iPhone or iPad, but you find that the movie file size is too large for a standard file transfer, message or email.
We are going to show you how to compress video on iPhone or iPad to reduce file size or lower video definition quality. Compressing video is not feature that’s built into iOS natively though, so we’ll rely on a free third-party app that does the job quite well.
To be clear, this approach takes a video file that has already been recorded and stored on the iPhone or iPad and compresses it. If you want to make a smaller video file size to start with, you can switch from using 4K video recording to 1080p or 720p beforehand, or change the video recording frame rate at 60fps or 30fps, each of which is the file size resizing a movie recording, but that is of course not useful for changing the compression or video quality of a video that has already been recorded. Hence, we use Video Compressor to shrink and shrink the file size and definition of a video in iOS.
How to Compress videos from iPhone and iPad with video compressor
- Grab Video Compressor for iOS from App Store, it’s free and works on iPhone and iPad
- Launch the Video Compressor app on the iPhone or iPad after downloading it
- Tap the video you want to compress and reduce the file size for
- Select “Choose” from the video preview screen to open that video in Video Compressor
- Use the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust the video compression based on the target file size of the compressed video, the further the slider moves to the left, the higher the compression and the smaller the resulting video file size.
- When you are satisfied with the compression and target file size of the video, select “Save” in the top right corner
- Video compressor works on the intended movie file, it may take a while depending on the size of the video selected on the iPad or iPhone
- The compressed video will be saved on your iOS Camera Roll when you are done
Video Compressor is very effective and you can easily reduce a very large, high-resolution video to a remarkably small size. In the example above, I reduced a video to 4% of its original size using Video Compressor on an iPad, reducing a 150MB video to just 6MB. Of course, this comes at a high cost to video quality as compressing video inevitably reduces the resolution and definition of any video, so use the slider and target size to suit your own usage and needs.
The ability to compress video to reduce size and reduce quality should probably be built right into iOS so iPhone and iPad users can do it directly in iOS without the need for third-party apps (a similar feature exists natively in Mac OS video encoder tools), so maybe we’ll get such a capability later in iOS too.
Keep in mind that if you’re using iCloud (and you should), and if you’re trying to email a very large video, you should be able to share it with Mail Drop too. And if you are close to the person you want to share a large video with, then sending AirDrop from iPhone to Mac or other device is also a viable solution.
It’s also worth pointing out that if you want to copy HD videos from an iPad or iPhone to a computer, the best way to do that is with a USB cable and direct transfer as outlined here, this is usually the fastest approximation it is also lossless.
Do you know of any other better way to compress video directly on an iPhone or iPad? Do you have a favorite solution or iOS app for this task? Let us know in the comments!
