How to Add a new disk partition in macOS

Make sure every drive you want to partition is connected to your Mac and follow these steps to create your own shiny new partition.

It is a good idea toup of your Mac before resizing disk partitions to avoid accidental data loss.

  1. Open the Disk Utility app. It’s in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder on the Mac.
  2. Add a new volume to the APFS container in Disk Utility

  3. Both external and internal volumes are available and listed under their respective headings. Click on the volume you want to partition.
  4. Click the “Partition” icon and then click “Partition”.Click on partition
  5. Click on the “+” button. If it is not available, the selected volume cannot be partitioned – probably because it is protected or fullClick on the plus button
  6. Enter a name for your new partition. The maximum length for the volume label is 11 characters if you are creating an MS-DOS (FAT) or ExFAT volume.
  7. Select a format for your new partition. Select APFS if you are not sure which one to choose.
  8. Enter the size you want your new partition to be. You can also use the image on the left and resize the partition by dragging it.Enter the size of the partition
  9. Finally click on “Apply”. The partition is created. Click “Done” when it is done.

After you create a new volume, it will appear on your desktop and in the Finder.

Open the partition to add or copy files, create files, save data, or anything else you could do with another physical drive.

Aside from creating partitions, Disk Utility app can come in handy for all sorts of things. Whether you’re formatting a drive to be compatible with Mac or Windows (or even for compatibility with both Mac and PC), creating a new partition to install a different version of macOS, or just want a place to store each drive and each volume connected to your computer. Mac, Disk Utility can really come in handy when you need it.

You can also delete a partition if you decide you no longer need it either. But keep in mind that this will delete all data on that partition. Make sure you have enough backups before doing this.
