Many Mac users like to create a bootable installation drive for installing OS X El Capitan, whether for a clean install or to make it easier to install OS X 10.11 on multiple Macs. We’ll walk through creating an OS X El Capitan bootable install flash drive with the final public version.

Before you begin, you should know that the prerequisites required to create a bootable OS X El Capitan installer are as follows:

  • An 8GB or larger USB stick like this one, it will be formatted and converted into the OS X El Capitan bootable installer
  • The OS X El Capitan installer application should be on the Mac and in the / Applications / folder, download OS X El Capitan here if you haven’t already (yes, you can download it again)

You have probably already created the USB drive in a Mac compatible format using Disk Utility, if not, you can follow the instructions here to format a drive for Mac OS X compatibility HFS +.

Once done, connect the USB / flash drive to the Mac with the OS X El Capitan installer application on it.

1: Rename the USB flash drive to become the OS X El Capitan Bootable Installer

The next thing you want to do is name the destination volume you want to change into a bootable installer, in this case an external USB flash drive. To avoid confusion, we will name the USB drive “ElCapInstaller” (without the quotes), but you can name it whatever you like as long as you change the command line syntax to match.

Rename the target USB drive for the OS X El Capitan boot disk to ElCapInstaller

You can do this through the Terminal or the Finder, as shown above.

2: Create the OS X El Capitan Bootable Installer Drive with a Terminal Command

Run the Terminal application, found in / Applications / Utilities / and enter the following command exactly (unless you have changed the target volume name of ElCapInstaller to something else) on a single line, the text will wrap because it is long, but it is important to have the correct syntax:

sudo / Applications / install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume / Volumes / ElCapInstaller –applicationpath / Applications / install OS X El Capitan.app –no interaction

Press the Return key and enter the administrator password when prompted.

You will then see the following screen text in the Terminal:

Erase disk: 0% … 10% … 20% … 30% … 100% … Copy installation files to disk … Copy complete. Make disk bootable … Copy boot files … Copy complete. “

The target USB disk or flash drive will be erased first and then copy the files to it so that it becomes a bootable OS X El Capitan installer. This may take a while, so wait for the “Ready” message before continuing.

If you see “Done”, that’s it, your OS X El Capitan installer drive has been created, it’s bootable, and you can use it to update as many Macs as you want with OS X 10.11.

To boot from the installer, hold down the Option key while booting the Mac system, and select it from the boot volume menu.
