Check tutorial of How to Delete All Emails from Mail in Mac OS X
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Delete All Emails from Mail in Mac OS X.
If you use the Mail app on a Mac, you are quite likely to regularly delete emails that you think are unnecessary, junk mail, or simply unnecessary. Usually this is a selective process of deleting certain email messages as needed, but in some situations you may want to go all out and delete every email in a particular Mail account, or even delete all emails from entire Mail app on a Mac, without deleting the associated email account from the Mail app. In others words, while the email messages are deleted from Mail, the email account remains in Mail on the Mac for further use.
Make regular backups of your Mac with Time Machine, so don’t save a backupup before doing this. If you don’t back-up and you delete all email in the Mail app, those emails are gone forever. Thus, this approach to delete all emails should be used with discretion and not universally applied to declare or delete email up space.
This is not a recommended action. Aside from some specific reasons for deleting every email from a Mac, this is simply not necessary for most Mac OS X users and you could end up up delete emails you wanted to keep.
How to Delete ALL email in Mail for Mac OS X
This is irreversible, don’t delete all emails unless you want them to be permanently deleted from the Mac Mail app (and possibly from anywhere depending on your backupup and mail server):
- Open the Mail app in Mac OS X if you haven’t already
- Select “Inbox” in the sidebar under Mailboxes in the primary inbox screen
- Now pull down the “Edit” menu and choose “Select All”, this will select and highlight any email in the Mail app’s mailboxes
- Now go back to the “Edit” menu and choose “Delete” – this will delete any selected email from the Mail app in Mac OS X, and since we’ve just chosen Select All, it means this will send all emails to the Trash or Mail app
- Once the inbox is empty, right click (or Ctrl + click) on the inbox in the sidebar and choose ‘Clear Deleted Items’ this completely erases any email from Mail in Mac OS X dat is stored in the trash, which in this case is every single email
- The Mail app inbox is now completely empty, there are no emails at all – they have all been deleted
You can repeat the process with the “Sent” folder, the “Draft” folder, and other folders in the Mail app if you’d like, too, if desired.
This is really only necessary for certain situations with certain types of e-mails and e-mail usage; maybe you used the Mail app for a junk mail account and you don’t want the junk mail to be received up space on the Mac hard drive, but you still want to keep the email address itself. Or maybe you just want to declare the ultimate email bankruptcy by deleting every message from Mail on Mac. Many people who rely on webmail clients like Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo don’t delete email at all, and since it’s stored on a remote server, they don’t worry about possible space the thousands of emails collected could take up up. That’s a big advantage of using a web-based email service, but for those using the Mac Mail app, you might be a bit more critical.
It’s worth mentioning that if you had the same email account set up on an iOS device, you might want to repeat the same process and delete all mail from Mail on iPhone or iPad using a similar process, which, just like the Mac approach, the emails from the iOS device and is also irreversible (at least without a backupup made).
And again, this trick does not delete the email account from the Mac, it only deletes the email messages themselves. The actual email account will remain on the Mac unless it is deleted separately.
