So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Deleting the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion “Recovery HD” Partition.

If you want to delete Mac OS X 10.7 Lion “Recovery HD” partition, you have to do some work as it is a hidden partition. Hidden means it’s not just a matter of using your dual boot to get to 10.6 and then delete it with Disk Utility.

Quick note for developers with Lion Developer Preview: deleting and merging Recover HD partition may not be a necessary procedure, but we won’t know for sure until Lion is completed and shipped. The basis for this is the brief mention in the release notes that DP4 was not upgradeable to the final version, which suggests you want to format and do a clean install once OS X Lion GM is released. Therefore, we assume that “Recovery HD” will be updated in addition to the base installation of Lion OS, and therefore the old dev version will not work with the final release – again, we’re not sure until Lion ships.

Finally, if you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t mess around with partitions, diskutil, merge or anything else, you could easily screw something up up and lose all your data. Okay, let’s get started.

Delete the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Recovery HD partition

There are a few ways to do this, all methods will result in data loss, which is the intention here, but I’ll point it out anyway. We’ll cover two methods: using the diskutil command line utility and using the Disk Utility GUI app.

Delete and merge a partition with diskutil from the command lineThis is the most precise method I know of to delete the partition as it targets the recovery drive directly and merges it with the entire Lion partition – if you’re not comfortable with the command line then this isn’t for you.

  • Launch the Terminal and type the following in the command line:
  • diskutil list

  • This will print the partition scheme of your disk and look something like this:
  • diskutil list

  • Search for “Recovery HD” and see which identifier it uses. In this screenshot it is disk0s4
  • To delete that partition, we’ll use the following command (you can also use the volume name):
  • diskutil eraseVolume HFS + Blank / dev / disk0s4

  • The partition will be wiped, you may want to do this with your default Lion partition as well as you will wipe the whole thing anyway. Either way, you will now have an empty partition, so you’ll want to merge that into your other Lion partition:
  • diskutil mergePartitions HFS + Lion disk0s3 disk0s4

  • This will merge the two partitions, with disk0s3 taking up and expanding the space of disk0s4, it will cause data loss, so don’t expect this to keep anything

The following approach is much more invasive as it formats the entire drive.

Delete the partition with Disk Utility by formatting the diskDisk Utility does not display “Recovery HD” just because it is a hidden partition, which means that you cannot just go to the app and delete it. What you can do, however, is format the entire disk, which then requires a clean install of Lion, either from Snow Leopard or with a created installation DVD. This is kind of a nuclear approach, but it also works to delete the recovery partition.

  • Boot the Mac from a recovery DVD, USB key, or attached drive
  • Start Disk Utility
  • Right click on the disk (not the partitions) and select “Erase”
  • Select the default Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the file system and name the drive
  • Click “Erase” to completely format the drive – you will lose all data on the drive and all partitions

Erase a disk with Disk Utility

This will format the drive giving you a clean slate to start with, but this isn’t necessarily the best approach due to the way Lion is provided through the App Store, which would require you to start all over again.
