Check tutorial of How to Disable AMBER Alerts on the iPhone
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Disable AMBER Alerts on the iPhone.
While the concept behind AMBER Alerts is fantastic, being startled by the iPhone emitting an extremely loud and terrifying blaring alarm in the middle of the night is not exactly a pleasant experience. This can be made even more frustrating for users who don’t know what the alert is for, and compounded by the very generous coverage area for an AMBER alert, where you are hundreds of miles from the epicenter of the event and still get the alarm. sent to your iPhone anyway. It’s not recommended, but as with other weather and government alerts, iOS provides an option to turn off all AMBER alerts coming to your iPhone.
We will emphasize that again; disabling the AMBER alarms feature is really not recommended as the system works best when all persons have the feature enabled, increasing effectiveness and reporting. Unfortunately, disabling the alert is the only way (at the moment) to disable the petrified sound effect, which may be appealing to some users who have perceived the alarms as an unusual glitch, if not downright incorrect based on their iPhone- location, sometimes in a completely different state from where the location of the alerts is specified.
Turn off the AMBER alerts and alarm sounds on iPhone
Currently there is only an option to turn off both the sound and the warning. This is what you want to do:
- Open Settings on the iPhone and go to “Notification Center”
- Scroll all the way down to find the “GOVERNMENT NOTICES” section
- Set the switch for “AMBER Alerts” to OFF
This turns off the very loud sound effect as well as disappointingly, it also turns off the actual important alert notifications.
Why can’t we just mute the AMBER Alert sound effect? Or turn it into something less scary?
Ideally, future versions of iOS will provide the ability to easily turn off the AMBER Alert sound effect or change it to a much more subtle sound that’s less surprising, while still getting the clearly important notifications through on everyone’s device. Most of us pay attention to every beep and beep that comes from ours phones and computers anyway, so the aggressive default sound Apple has added is very likely not essential to get our attention.
Because of how distracting the warning sound effect is, many users who hear it once want to immediately check the feature completely out. Obviously that’s bad as it hurts the effectiveness of the program, so it’s clear that some changes are needed. If you’ve never heard an AMBER alert sent to an iPhone before, it’s hard to quantify how distracting the noise from iOS is. It’s not your standard ’emergency message’ sound breaking through TV or radio, that would be much more enjoyable, it’s an extremely loud and intrusive sound that overrides all of the Do’s mute settings, volume settings, warning sounds and audio preferences. Do not disturb feature. It’s really surprising whether you’re sleeping, sitting in the house, or driving, and when you’re in a room with multiple devices receiving the notification at the same time, it’s almost a heart attack-inducing cacophony that basically sounds like the world is coming to an end.
Improvements in iOS AMBER Alert are needed
AMBER Alerts also have another problem; the data sent to your iPhone is not exactly clear. Several of my friends recently got one in Arizona, USA (pictured above). Many of them had never heard of an AMBER alarm, let alone the sound, and it certainly gives no indication that it is intended to help locate a missing child. If you don’t already know what they are, you’re basically getting the gruesome warning sound on your iPhone with a really vague message that says a location, a single car description, and an alphanumeric number (which turns out to be the license plate) – one of my friends actually thought that it was a spam message for car sales somehow sent to their iPhone. Plus, tapping the AMBER alert notification doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t pull up more information, and it doesn’t explain what it is … it’s just under the “Emergency Alerts” section of the Notifications Panel, which also lists dangerous weather conditions and events.
All of this seems like a mistake that needs to be corrected so that users can at least provide details about the warning and ultimately help respond to it. It also seems bizarre that the only way to get relief from the sound effect is through the feature, so here’s to hope Apple offers some changes in a future iOS update for an otherwise important one feature.
