So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Disable Emergency SOS on iPhone to Stop Dialing 911 Accidentally.

The iPhone XS, XR, XS Max, and iPhone X offer an emergency SOS feature which automatically dials 911 when the devices side buttons are pressed for a few seconds. The Emergency SOS countdown will then start sounding an alarm and counting down from 3, 2, 1, before calling emergency services on your behalf, thanks to a feature called Auto Call. While this could theoretically be useful in some extreme scenarios, it can also be triggered surprisingly easily by simply trying to reboot iPhone X, taking a screenshot on iPhone X, temporarily disabling Face ID, or even just by accidentally holding a few down buttons.

With a small adjustment of the settings, you can disable Auto Call with Emergency SOS. With the feature turned off, you can still use Emergency SOS, but you’ll have to swipe the Emergency SOS control on the screen to call emergency services, instead of just holding down the iPhone X, XS, XR hardware buttons.

How to Disable Emergency SOS Auto Call on iPhone XS, XR, X

This will disable automatic calling for emergency services by pressing and holding buttons on the iPhone X, but still has the feature ready to use if needed.

  1. Open the “Settings” app on iPhone X and then go to “Emergency SOS”
  2. Turn off “Auto Call” by moving the switch to the off position
  3. Disable Auto Call or Emergency Services on iPhone X.

Now you can still summon the Emergency SOS screen (which is also the same screen that you can shut down and turn off iPhone X, XS, XR and access the medical ID), without accidentally calling 911 because of the automatic call feature by the buttons a little too long.

Again, you can still call emergency services via Emergency SOS if you turn off Auto Dial, but you need to swipe right on the Emergency SOS button when it appears on the screen after you press and hold the side buttons on the iPhone X.

Remember, you can also let Siri call emergency services and 911 for you, so if you’ve turned on Hey Siri for voice activation, you can do it completely hands-free, and maybe more on purpose.

And in case you were wondering, yes, people accidentally call 911 because of this feature, and I accidentally activated it myself several times, luckily I cancel the countdown in seconds to avoid a wrong call that up local emergency services. The same feature also exists on the Apple Watch, where people also accidentally call emergency services with that device.

If you have any concerns about this, or if you see the siren alert blaring out of your pocket unexpectedly because it’s calling 911, turn off Auto Call and avoid most erroneous numbers.
