Check tutorial of How to Disable Location Services on Mac

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Disable Location Services on Mac.

Some Mac users may want to turn off location services completely features on their Mac. This is not recommended for most Mac owners, but disabling all Location Services functionality on MacOS may be desirable for security and privacy reasons, or even by system administrators who do not want them to control geolocation features.

Disabling geolocation and location services on the Mac is fairly easy, but keep in mind that turning off location services on a Mac will make that computer lose the ability to access important features like Find My Mac, and even simple tasks like using the Maps app or web-based map features to get directions from your current location to elsewhere. Accordingly, most Mac users should probably leave location services enabled, or at least selectively disable location features they don’t want to use location data for apps.

  10. How to turn off all location services on Mac completely

If location services are disabled on the Mac, Mac apps or services cannot use the current location of the Mac.

If you turn off location services, you won’t be able to find out your current location, such as asking Siri about the weather, getting directions via Maps, or other similar tasks on the Mac.

Keep in mind that turning this setting off won’t remove location data from files or delete location data already stored elsewhere, in apps or metadata. It simply prevents apps from further using or determining your location. Usually the type of files that can contain location data are images, and if you have image files that you want to remove location data from on a Mac, you can delete the location one by one from images in Photos on the Mac, or you can delete all the images in a Mac app such as ImageOptim to remove geolocation data and all other metadata from the image files.

* Perhaps the biggest drawback to disabling location services on a Mac is that it also simultaneously uses the very useful “Find My Mac” feature, which is similar to “Find My iPhone” in that it allows you to locate a Mac that has been lost or stolen.

Disabling location features completely on a Mac can be a bit extreme for some users, so for many, a better approach could be to selectively control location usage and manage or disable location services features on a per app and per system feature or process base through the same System Preferences panel. It can also be helpful to enable the location usage indicator in the Mac menu bar, so you can easily control when and which app is using location data.

If your primary reason for turning off location services is for privacy or security purposes, you may also want to turn off location services on iPhone and iPad, although that’s a bit distracting and often turns off location services for apps that don’t. I need location data, such as all social media or the camera, is sufficient.

The tips here apply to modern versions of macOS (Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra) and Mac OS X (El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, etc) but if you have an older Mac with Snow Leopard, you can also turn off Location Services with another setting if you do not want location information to be used on the computer.

Of course, you can also reverse this decision and enable Location Services on the Mac too:

How to Re-enable location services Features on Mac

If you’ve turned off Location Services and regret it, or otherwise want to turn it on on a Mac, all you have to do is reverse the steps above to turn the location feature back on:

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select the “Security & Privacy” panel, then choose the Privacy tab
  3. Select “Location Services” from the menu on the left
  4. Click on the unlock button to authenticate with an administrator login
  5. Check the box next to ‘Enable location services’ to turn the location on features

Most Mac users should keep the location services feature enabled, although sensibly disabling the location feature for apps that don’t require location data is still a good idea.
