Check tutorial of How to Disable the Mac Boot Chime Completely
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Disable the Mac Boot Chime Completely.
If you are a Mac owner, you will know that every time the Mac reboots or starts up it makes a startup chime. While you can temporarily mute the chime by holding down the Mute key on any Mac keyboard, you can also choose to turn the chime off completely by going to the command line.
To be clear, this will turn off the startup chime completely, at least until it’s reversed with another terminal command string on the same Mac. This works in all modern versions of OS X on any modern Mac.
Disable the Mac Boot Chime Sound
Launch Terminal, found in / Applications / Utilities /, then enter the following command to turn off the startup chime:
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume =% 80
Enter the admin password when prompted, which is required by using the sudo command. On the next reboot, the Mac will be completely silent. By adjusting the parameter at the end of that command, you can change the total volume of that startup sound, but it seems to prefer ascii characters.
Note that some Macs may need a slightly different syntax to turn off the startup chime, another variation that works on some modern Macs is as follows:
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume =% 01
Restarting the Mac after executing the command will demonstrate the new silent boot process.
Re-enable the Mac startup sound
To revert to the default setting and get the startup sound back, you can delete the variable with the -d flag. Back in the Terminal, the command would look like this:
sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
If you’re not comfortable with customizing OS X with the Terminal, you better use the one-time Mute key approach or use a simple tool like StartUp Ninja to mute the sound. StartupNinja is really just a GUI frontend to the nvram tool discussed here.
Thanks to AnserMan for the tip links in our comments, although they suggested using% 00 instead of% 80 as the parameter
Personally I like the startup chime a bit, to me they indicate the Mac is booting successfully up, and it also has a bit of a nostalgic aspect to it, but I’m an old Mac user. If you have another way to toggle the startup sound on a Mac, or if you just have your opinion on it feature, which has been around on every Mac since its inception, let us know in the comments.
