Check tutorial of How to Downgrade a Mac from OS X Mavericks to OS X Mountain Lion

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Downgrade a Mac from OS X Mavericks to OS X Mountain Lion.

While we generally recommend staying on the latest versions of OS X, some users may encounter incompatibilities or issues related to updating their Macs to OS X Mavericks, and for these unique circumstances it may make sense to use the Mac downgrading back to an earlier release version of OS X. For such specific cases, we’ll cover downgrading from Mavericks (10.9) to OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). To downgrade using this method, you must have a Time Machine backupup prior to the upgrade / installation of OS X 10.9. If you don’t have a Time Machine backupup before installing OS X 10.9, this particular solution won’t work for you.

Definitely come back up the current volume and all files before attempting the downgrade process, otherwise you may lose the files and data created between the original upgrade to Mavericks and this downgrade procedure.

Downgrade OS X Mavericks to OS X Mountain Lion

This will downgrade a Mac with OS X Mavericks (10.9) to OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). Yes, this also works for downgrading to OS X Lion (10.7), but Lion is buggy and we don’t recommend it. If given the choice, always run OS X Mountain Lion or stick to OS X Mavericks instead.

  1. Back up the Mac with Time Machine before you start, you can easily turn it off by clicking “Back Up Now ”from the Time Machine menu, or at least back manually up your critical files – this is important, don’t skip this
  2. If the drive is not already connected, attach the Time Machine volume to the Mac that has the previous backups of OS X 10.8
  3. Restart the Mac and hold down Command + R to boot into the recovery menu
  4. From the OS X Utilities startup selection menu, choose ‘Restore from Time Machine Backup’
  5. downgrade-os-x-time-machine

  6. Read the “Recover your system” screen, understand what you are doing and click “Continue”
  7. confirm-restore-to-downgrade

  8. Select the backup source – this should be the Time Machine drive that contains the OS X Mountain Lion installation
  9. select-time-machine-source-for-downgrade-osx

  10. Select a backupup corresponding to a date, time, and Mac OS X version you want to restore to – make sure the Mac OS X version is “10.8.x” to make sure you downgrade OS X to Mountain Lion, and choose “Get on”
  11. select-backup-for-downgrade-mac-os-x

  12. From the “Select a Destination” menu, choose the primary Mac hard drive, usually called “Macintosh HD”, then choose “Restore” to start the downgrade process
  13. select-mac-drive-to-downgrade-os-x

  14. Let Time Machine finish restoring OS X Mountain Lion, Mac will reboot automatically when downgrading OS X Mavericks is finished

When the Mac boots up, you’ll be returned to OS X Mountain Lion and everything will be restored as it was on the last backupup created with Time Machine prior to the upgrade to OS X Mavericks. Yes, that means you have a Mountain Lion backupup must have available, otherwise this particular method will not work to return from Mavericks.

Now is a great time to recover your individual files created while running OS X Mavericks, either manually if you copied the files to a volume yourself, or through Time Machine.

Finally, another downgrade option would be to format the Mac and perform a clean install, similar to performing a clean Mavericks install, but with an earlier version of OS X as the installer. However, that’s a topic for another walkthrough.
