Quite a few Macs have macOS High Sierra public beta installed or the developer releases to test the new ones features, but it’s not uncommon to test beta system software and then decide to downgrade back to a stable release.

This one tutorial Will show you how to downgrade from macOS High Sierra (10.13) beta back to macOS Sierra (10.12.x) or OS X El Capitan (10.11.x) by using Time Machine to restore a previously created backupup to recover. Using a previous Time Machine backupup provides the easiest way to downgrade macOS High Sierra.

Important: If you haven’t made a Time Machine backup from a previous installation of macOS Sierra or El Capitan, this approach to downgrade won’t work because you don’t have a Time Machine backup to restore from. Do not proceed without a Time Machine backupup you can use to restore.

Warning: You format and erase the hard drive in this process, this will destroy all files and data on the drive. Don’t go on without a back-up of your files and data. Failure to do so will result in permanent data loss.

First, make sure you have a Time Machine backup to restore to and that you have an up-to-date backup of your important files and data.

  1. If you haven’t already done so, connect the Time Machine volume to the Mac
  2. Restart the Mac and hold the Command + R keys together to boot into recovery mode
  3. In the “macOS Utilities” screen, choose “Disk Utility”
  4. Choose the partition or hard drive on which macOS High Sierra is installed and then choose ‘Erase’ button
  5. Rename the drive then select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” as the file system format then click “Erase” – THIS WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THE DRIVE, DO NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT A BACK-UP
  6. After the drive is formatted, exit Disk Utility to return to the ‘macOS Utilities’ screen and now choose ‘Restore from Time Machine Backup’
  7. Time Machine restore to downgrade High Sierra

  8. Choose your Time Machine volume as the backup source and click Continue
  9. In the “Select a backup file” screen, selectup”the most recent available backupup corresponding to the version of macOS you want to restore – remember Sierra is “10.12” and El Capitan is “10.11”, while High Sierra is “10.13”, then choose Continue
  10. Select the destination to which you want the Time Machine backupup want to recover, this is the partition or drive you formatted in step 5, then choose ‘Recover’ and confirm
  11. Time Machine backup recoveryup to downgrade from High Sierra beta

  12. Let the recovery process complete, it may take a while depending on the size of the hard drive and the backupup

When done, the Mac will automatically reboot itself and reboot into the MacOS version you restored to. MacOS High Sierra was removed during the erase and formatting process and the earlier macOS release installed through Time Machine recovery process.

Downgrade macOS High Sierra beta

* Normally you can downgrade by simply restoring from a previous Time Machine backupup to downgrade, but because macOS High Sierra wants to use the APFS file system (unlike HFS from previous Mac OS releases), you’ll want to format the hard drive back to the previous file system. That is not the case if you have not updated to APFS or, for example, when downgrading from Sierra to El Capitan.

If you downgrade from macOS High Sierra beta because you find it unstable or have performance issues, you probably want to wait for the final version of macOS High Sierra is available before reinstalling – the final release is scheduled for launch this fall.
