Enable Dark Mode on MacOS Mojave

Check tutorial of How to Enable Dark Mode on MacOS Mojave

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Enable Dark Mode on MacOS Mojave.

Available in MacOS Mojave 10.14 and above, the Dark Mode theme provides a unique visual interface and desktop environment to work in, shifting almost all on-screen visual elements to dark grays and blacks. For many Mac users, the Dark theme may be the most popular new feature to arrive in macOS Mojave, and the new UI theme may be the only reason some Mac users update to the latest system software release.

You can easily enable the dark mode theme in macOS while initially configuring macOS, or you can switch between the dark mode and light mode display at any time by adjusting the Mac OS system settings.

Note that enabling dark mode in macOS requires macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, as previous versions do not support the full dark visual theme *.

How to Enable Dark Mode Theme on Mac

  1. Open the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select the “General” control panel
  3. At the very top of the general settings, look for the ‘Appearance’ section, then choose ‘Dark’

  5. When done, close System Preferences

The visual differences between dark mode and light mode are dramatic and immediately apparent.

Whatever it sounds like, the theme in dark mode is very dark. Gone are the bright whites and light grays that have been the standard appearance of macOS for a while, as they are basically reversed to black and deep dark gray. Many users really enjoy the look of the dark mode on Mac OS, especially for those who work at night or in a dimly lit room, or if you just find the bright white light interface distracting or eye-catching.

You will also notice that the background image changes depending on whether you are using the Dark or Light theme, but you can also change the background images individually at any time.

Likewise, the Light Mode theme is very light. With plenty of crisp grays and crisp white visual elements, this has in some way been the default look of MacOS for quite some time (Mac OS X has had several distinct visual themes over the years, from aqua to brushed metal to beyond, with the most recent Recognizable UI appearance change that arrived in Yosemite as the bright Light theme, and with the Dark theme option arriving in Mojave).

You can go from Dark theme to Light theme at any time by going to the System Preferences General Settings and tweaking from there, and the effect is always immediate without the need for a system reboot or the like. Everything on the screen is simply redrawn in the dark look or the light look, depending on which user interface is set by the user.

There are a few other settings that can affect how the dark appearance or light appearance can look in Mac OS, including turning off transparency effects in the Mac OS interface when using the Increase Contrast setting, and adjust the highlight color for what is selected on the screen. Even your background can also change the look of light and dark appearances, if you have transparency effects enabled on the Mac.

How to Enable the light gray theme on Mac (the default visual appearance)

  1. Open the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select the “General” control panel
  3. At the very top of General Settings, look for the ‘Appearance’ section, then choose ‘Light’

  5. When done, close System Preferences

Whether you prefer the Light Mode or Dark Mode theme, or perhaps both or both, depending on the setting you are working in or the time of day is entirely a matter of personal preference. You can always try out the different appearance settings and if you don’t like it, switch back.

* Note that macOS High Sierra has a very broken dark theme that can be enabled, but it is not recommended, while other earlier versions of macOS can enable a dark menu bar and dark Dock appearance in Mac OS X, although the dark appearance will not be displayed across to the other UI elements on the Mac.
