Check tutorial of How to Enable Dynamic Desktops in MacOS Mojave
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Enable Dynamic Desktops in MacOS Mojave.
Dynamic desktops are new feature in macOS that allows a Mac’s desktop background to change throughout the day as time changes. Perhaps the most prominent example of this feature is the default desktop in macOS Mojave of Desert Sand Dunes, which, when Dynamic Desktops is enabled, shifts the scene from morning, day, and night. It is a subtle effect that is really beautiful, even if it is purely visual in nature and usually just eye candy.
Dynamic Desktops requires macOS Mojave 10.14 or higher, earlier versions of macOS system software do not include the feature (although all previous versions of Mac OS X have the ability to automatically change the desktop background at a specific time interval, we’ll cover that briefly below).
How to Use dynamic desktops on Mac
- Go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
- Select the “Desktop and Screen Saver” preference pane and then choose the “Desktop” tab
- Search for “Dynamic Desktop” at the top of the desktop background images and choose an available dynamic desktop image as the background
- Optionally adjust whether the Dynamic Desktop should be displayed as a dynamic image (meaning it changes throughout the day if the feature intended), or if the background is displayed as a still image (light or dark)
- Close System Preferences when done
Once the dynamic desktop is set, the background image will automatically change throughout the day according to the time of day at your current location.
For example, in the middle of the day, the Dynamic Desktop will show a bright version of the background image:
But if it is the middle of the night, you will notice that the background time shifts to a dark version of the background image that is set automatically.
There are also many in-between photos, depending on the time of day. In essence, it seems like time is passing, as if you were sitting in the same place for a period of 24 hours watching the same scene changing as the sun rises and sets, the stars appear and the moonlight casts a different light and shadows on the landscape . It is actually quite beautiful!
Dynamic Desktops can provide a feature that’s new to macOS Mojave 10.14 and above, but earlier versions of Mac OS and Mac OS X have long had a similar feature which automatically changes the desktop picture background at a set time interval (e.g. every 5 seconds, every hour, every day, etc.).
If you are not using macOS 10.14 or newer and you feel left out, don’t worry too much as you can achieve a similar effect by using automatic desktop wallpaper changing feature to mimic dynamic desktops on other macOS versions as discussed here, and that trick works even on the oldest versions of Mac OS X system software.
Currently macOS Mojave only includes a few dynamic desktops, but hopefully more will appear as options in the near future, and maybe the feature even gets third-party support, either officially or through unofficial mods. The potential here is quite remarkable, especially since the iPhone camera keeps getting better, and the iPhone time lapse photography video feature could be perfect to post up unique and customized Dynamic Desktop displays by almost anyone.
