So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Enable a Recall Email Feature in Gmail to Undo Sending Erroneous Messages.

If you’ve ever sent an email that you immediately realized was incomplete, had errors, or worse, went to the wrong person, then you know that feeling of dread. For Gmail users, an optional setting provides a layer of forgiveness for those situations, providing the ability to recall a sent email if acted quickly. This is especially great for those of us who use Gmail as the default email client for email sent from web browsers.

Currently limited to webmail users only, the Gmail ‘Undo Send’ feature is considered experimental by Google, but it works flawlessly to retrieve an incorrect e-mail message.

How to Enable “Undo Send” email in Gmail

You must specifically enable this recall feature within some optional settings of the Gmail web client, and that’s what we’re going to show you how to do here:

  1. Go to gmail.com and log into your Google account as usual
  2. Click on the gear icon / settings button in the top right corner of the Gmail inbox window, then choose the “Settings” option from the drop-down menu
  3. Where to access Gmail settings to enable Undo Send feature

  4. Go to the “General” tab in Gmail settings
  5. Find the ‘Undo Send’ option in the general preferences and adjust your recall email / undo send cancellation period: 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds and 30 seconds
  6. Adjust the Undo Send Email Revocation Period in the Gmail Options

  7. Scroll down again and select “Save changes”

Now that Undo Send is enabled, you can test it or trust it’s there. Around the feature, just send an email, then look at the top of a Gmail window and after a message has been sent, you will see an ‘Undo’ option available, it is right next to the ‘Your message has been sent’ box that shows up in yellow at the top of the screen.

Undo Send in Gmail allows you to retrieve a sent email

Depending on the cancellation period you have chosen, that ‘undo’ option will float at the top of the screen and offer some forgiveness to recall an email message if you realize something was sent wrong to the wrong recipient , too many typos, or maybe just some general regret. When you click “Undo”, the email will not be sent, it will return and become a draft – it will not be deleted. This allows you to quickly correct the error and resend or think about the message before resending it.

The email recall feature likely works by inserting a time delay for the message that is actually processed and sent to the recipient, as it is virtually impossible to retrieve an email already in the someone else’s inbox has arrived. Assuming that’s the case, the cancellation period chosen is just adjusting that shipping delay, so pick something that works best for you. The default setting of 10 seconds isn’t bad and still allows for fast email delivery, but if you’re prone to mistakes and typos, the more forgiving 20 or 30 seconds option might be better.

Either way, this is incredibly useful feature that’s worth enabling for all users who use Gmail as their primary email address. It’s convenient enough to have a similar option feature should be introduced in every email app, whether you’re sending an email from Mail on iOS and an iPhone, to Mac OS X, Windows, and Android… hopefully we’ll get there!

note that up until recently, Undo the Send feature was considered experimental and had to be enabled from the Labs section before it would appear. This should no longer be necessary, but if you don’t see the Undo Send option under General Settings or for legacy purposes, it looks like this in Labs:

Turn on an Undo Send option in Gmail

By enabling that and then saving the changes, the Undo Send option would appear under General Settings. Have fun undoing!
