You will need a USB cable and a computer with iTunes. Make sure to update to the latest version of iTunes on the Mac or Windows PC before starting this process. You want a backupup of iPad Pro to hand before starting this process, otherwise restoring may result in data loss.
- Connect iPad Pro to a computer with a USB cable
- Open iTunes on the computer (Mac or Windows)
- Press and release Volume Up
- Press and release Volume down
- Hold down the Power button until the iPad Pro is in recovery mode
- iTunes warns that a device has been found in recovery mode
Once in recovery mode in iTunes, you can update or restore iPad Pro as usual using iTunes. You can also use IPSW if needed, although the IPSW file should be signed as usual and match the iPad Pro model. You can find IPSW files here if needed.
Keep in mind that restoring an iOS device can lead to data loss. You must be sure to have a backupup available to recover your data from, otherwise you may lose data.
How to Exit recovery mode on iPad Pro
If you want to get out of recovery mode on iPad Pro without restoring or doing anything about it from iTunes, simply restart iPad Pro:
- Disconnect iPad Pro from the computer
- Press and release the volume Up button
- Press and release Volume down button
- Hold down the Power button, hold until you see the Apple logo on the screen
Remember, recovery mode is not as low as DFU mode, but for most troubleshooting issues that require device recovery, recovery mode on iPad Pro will do the job. DFU mode is really only necessary if a device is completely stuck in an unusable or bricked state, such as during a failed iOS update or the like.
Note that this only applies to the iPad Pro models without button on the front of the device (the home button), so from model year 2020, but only for the iPad Pro. The normal iPad remains one Home button, and the 2020 base iPad with a Home button can go into recovery mode and DFU mode in the same way as all previous iPad models with a Home button did.
