The good news is that both entering and exiting full screen mode in any Mac app in macOS High Sierra, macOS Sierra, Mac OS X El Capitan or Yosemite is very easy, and if you find yourself in this situation, then don’t feel stupid, because some very technical people have ended up in the same situation.
As it turns out, you can enter or exit full screen mode with a click on that same green button, or by using a keystroke. We show you both.
Open full screen in Mac OS X with Green Maximize Button
Maximizing the green button in the top left corner of a Mac window, that window or application opens in full screen mode. If you click on that button, you will see a transition animation and you will be in full screen mode, and the window title bar will disappear.
Now that you are in full screen mode, some confusion remains here; some users don’t know that they got into full screen mode this way, and the next obvious question is, how do you get out of full screen mode? No sweat, it’s as easy as you’ll see next.
Exit full screen mode in Mac OS X with green Button
Because it maximizes greenery button put you in full screen mode, you can also use that green maximization button to exit full screen mode. What seems to confuse many Mac users is common how to find that green button once an app is sent to full screen where the window title bar disappears. This answer is quite simple:
- In full screen mode, move your mouse cursor to the very top of the Mac screen until the menu bar and window bar appear
- Click on the newly visible green button in the top left corner to exit full screen mode
The big difference between how this works now and how it worked in previous versions of Mac OS X is the output button is. In previous versions of Mac OS X, you hovered your cursor to the top right corner to exit full screen button, but that’s part of the green now button on the other side of the screen.
Now, the green button sends apps to full screen mode in Mac OS X Yosemite and the green button also pulls apps out of full screen mode in Mac OS X Yosemite. Make sure to move your mouse cursor to the top of a full screen app to access it buttons. The short video below shows this:
If you’re not particularly satisfied with the way the Mac maximizes green button behaves now, you can actually reset it to a real maximize and minimize button again by using BetterTouchTool to change the green button as discussed here. Otherwise, if you are thinking of Option + Click maximize buttonwill also prevent you from being sent to full screen mode.
Exit full screen mode in Mac OS X with a keystroke
For users who like keyboard shortcuts, there is an easy solution to exit (and enter) full screen mode that uses a fairly easy to remember keystroke:
- Command + Control + F will exit or enter full screen mode
Note that in some applications, such as Finder, you can just press the Escape key to exit full screen mode, but the Escape key isn’t widely accepted as a full-screen toggle, so you’ll want to Command + Control + F instead use a keyboard shortcut, which is widely accepted in all Mac apps that support full screen.
It’s somewhat interesting that Command + Control + F was adopted as the keystroke to enter and exit full screen mode, as that’s what was widely recommended by users who created their own keyboard shortcuts for opening / closing the keyboard when the full screen functionality first appeared in macOS / Mac OS X many releases ago.
So if you find yourself stuck in full screen mode in macOS High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan or Mac OS X Yosemite, now you know at least two ways to get out.
Perhaps a future version of Mac OS X will allow users to manually adjust the green maximization button behavior without relying on Option + clicks or third-party tools, but sending that cursor for now up or learn the exciting keystroke.
