So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Figure Out Which Direction You Are Facing With iPhone & Maps.

The iPhone has the Compass app to help you see which direction you are facing, but if you are in an area with cellular reception it is much more practical and useful to use the Maps app. This allows you to see on a map of the area which direction you’re facing so you can quickly see landmarks or whatever you’re looking for.

This works on any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with an internet connection, although it is probably most useful in the 3G / 4G models for obvious reasons.

  • Launch the Maps app and tap the arrow icon to find where you are
  • When Maps has centered your location, tap the arrow icon again

The arrow icon changes to show what looks like a flashlight coming out of the point, this orients the Maps app based on the direction you are looking. Use this feature to quickly find North, South, East and West, or if you are in the middle of nowhere, you can use it to find your way to the nearest road or known landmark you find on Google Maps.

Use the Maps app as a compass to see which direction you're facing from an iPhone or iPad

The main weakness of this method is that iOS and Google Maps do not store or cache the map data locally on the device. This means that if you are outside of the cell range and you are using the compass feature Maps only gives you a direction indicated on a blank grid, so you can’t find meaningful landmarks or points on the map. This prevents an iOS device from serving as a true GPS replacement for serious outdoor use, but if you’re in trouble it could be better than nothing.

This feature does not work if location services is turned off, a feature some people turn off as it can shorten battery life on some iOS devices.
