So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Filter & Mute Unknown Senders Messages on iPhone & iPad from Known Contacts.

iPhone and iPad users can choose to use a new ‘Filter Unknown Senders’ feature in iOS messaging app which will automatically mute and separate incoming messages from unrecognized contacts. This is extremely useful if your phone number is publicly listed on a website like Craigslist, if you are a public figure, or if you happen to receive a remarkable number of incoming messages from numbers you don’t recognize.

By running this message filtering feature enabled, your iOS Messages app basically has two inboxes: people in your contacts list and everyone else who isn’t part of your iPhone or iPad contacts list.

How to Enable sorting of contacts and unknown senders in iOS messages

If you want to sort and filter unknown contacts in a separate section of Messages app on iPhone or iPad, here’s how to enable it feature:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to ‘Messages’
  2. Find the option for “Filter Unknown Senders” and toggle it ON – note the message below that the featureTo: “Turn off iMessages notifications from people not in your contacts and sort them into a separate list.”
  3. Filter unknown senders in iOS in another messaging app inbox

  4. Return to the Messages app to find the two message inboxes: “Contacts and SMS” and “Unknown Senders” – this will be sorted automatically, tap either tab to select that message inbox

Since this also disables notifications from messages from people not in your contact list, you avoid having to go into Do Not Disturb mode or use the Mute switch if you just don’t want to be bothered by the other messages .

Anyone in the “Unknown Senders” list does not trigger a default notification on your device and no longer ends up in your primary celebrity inbox:

Note that the setting states that iMessages are filtered, but in my experience any unknown senders not in the contact list are placed in the “Unknown Senders” box, which also includes text messages and not just iMessage users.

Turn this around feature off doesn’t delete messages, it just merges the messages inbox back into the same default Messages app view.

This works the same on all iOS devices, but it’s probably much more useful on the iPhone, where people tend to receive most of their messages. Filtering feature requires a recent version of iOS, older versions do not support Unknown Sender inbox in Messages app.
