So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Fix Archive Utility When It Stops Working, Crashes, or Freezes in Mac OS X.

Archive Utility is the little system app that is launched when an archive needs to be handled by OS X, usually it starts itself, extracts a zip, sit, tar, gz or any other archive file, then quits by itself. Lately, however, there have been widespread reports of weird issues with Archive Utility, where a zip or other archive file won’t decompress, instead the Archive Utility app just completely stops working and fades into obscurity before freezing or crashing. If you restart it, it will just crash again. Annoying, but don’t worry, there’s an easy fix!

Fix Crash issues with Archive Utility

Restarting the Mac works, but that’s a huge pain, so don’t do that. To fix the issues with the Archive Utility, you must instead restart a daemon process called “appleeventsd” running in the background.

Restart appleeventsd via Activity MonitorHere is how to restart appleeventsd with Activity Monitor. You can access that app from / Applications / Utilities /, but it’s fastest to launch from Spotlight:

  • Press Command + Spacebar and type “Activity Monitor” followed by the Return key to launch the Mac task manager app
  • Pull down the list of processes and choose “All Processes”, then search for ‘appleeventsd’
  • Select ‘appleeventsd’ and click on the red ‘Close Process’ button, confirm when prompted

This will cause appleeventsd to reload, and Archive Utility will start behaving again in that reboot process.

Fix Archive Utility crashes

You can now unpack and create archives as usual again.

Restart appleeventsd via TerminalIf the command line is your thing, just type in the Terminal:

sudo killall appleeventsd

That can be faster for more advanced users.

Whichever route you choose, go back to your original archive file and open it. Archive Utility will run, extract the archive file and stop it as new on its own.

This is clearly a bug with Archive Utility, and the symptoms are almost always the same and very easy to reproduce when you run into the problem: Archive Utility is started to open an archive, but the progress indicator never moves, the spinning beach ball appears and eventually the app ends up crash. If you are impatient while waiting for the app to crash, you can choose to force the app to quit, but the crash reporter will still start. This should be resolved in an upcoming update of OS X soon, but in the meantime, use the solution outlined above.
