Check tutorial of Fix for Mac OS X Not Remembering Wireless Networks
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Fix for Mac OS X Not Remembering Wireless Networks.
Sometimes Mac OS does not remember wireless networks previously connected or connected to. This could be due to an error or a setting option. In this article, we will discuss what to do if you find that a Mac does not remember Wi-Fi networks as expected, including the settings to look for, and a troubleshooting technique that can fix these issues.
The first thing to do is to make sure Mac OS X has turned on the setting that allows the Mac to remember Wi-Fi networks. If you are joining a network, you will see the option “Remember this network” and make sure it is checked.
How to Let a Mac remember all connected Wi-Fi networks
There’s also a wider system setting that can be turned on or off manually, and when it’s turned off, the Mac will remember that the networks don’t:
- Open System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Go to “Network” and then choose “Wi-Fi” from the menu
- Choose ‘Advanced’ button in the corner
- Under the ‘Wi-Fi’ tab, check the setting for ‘Remember networks this computer has connected to’
- Choose to apply the settings and then close System Preferences
That can solve the problems for many Mac users and the networks can be remembered as expected.
But that’s not always the case. I’ve run into a strange problem before where Mac OS X Lion no longer remembered a specific wireless network, forcing me to manually select the connection and then enter the password every time I wanted to connect to that wireless router. This appears to be a common problem with wireless connectivity in some versions of Mac OS X and usually occurs upon waking up from sleep or restarting a Mac, which is followed up the connection error. I came across the answer in the comments to a previous article about Lion’s Wi-Fi problems here on OSXDaily, and it resolved further issues for me.
Fix Mac, not remember wireless networks with Authorization Recovery
- Open the “Disk Utility” application, located in Applications> Utilities
- Select “Macintosh HD” from the menu on the left, then click the “First Aid” tab on the right
- Click on “Restore Disk Permissions” and let this run, it may take 15 minutes or more
- Restart the Mac
- Connect to the wireless network as usual by checking the “Remember this network” box
You should now be able to sleep and restart the Mac without forgetting connection failures or the wireless network.
This is one of those rare instances where disk permissions repair, an oft-referenced generic Mac placebo for many troubleshooting problems, actually does something and fixes the problem. Try it for yourself and let us know if it worked for you.

Update system software for WiFi patches and bug fixes
It’s also a good idea to update Mac OS X to the latest version available, which sometimes contains bug fixes to fix network issues or Wi-Fi stability issues. That alone can fix this kind of problem for you, but continuing with the other solutions after that is also OK.
Back upup of the Mac before updating system software.
