So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Force Quit with Touch Bar on Mac.

Ever wondered how to force quit apps with the Touch Bar Macs? While there are many different ways to force quit Mac apps that aren’t responding, perhaps the most common force quit method is the Option + Command + Escape key sequence. But that Touch Bar Escape key is software … see the possibility of a problem?

If an app is unresponsive, the software Escape key on the Mac Touch Bar is often inaccessible and also unusable so those deep-seated keystrokes won’t always work to force stuck apps on Touch Bar Macs.

Don’t worry, if you have a Touch Bar Mac without a hardware Escape key, you can use other methods to force quit Mac apps as we’ll cover here.

First of all, you may want to try to forcibly refresh the Touch Bar on a Mac by focusing on the related processes. That can revive the Touch Bar and allow you to use the virtual Escape key on the Touch Bar to quit the Mac in the usual way.

An app is stuck, hangs or crashes and the Touch Bar is not working, so you cannot access the Escape key? Uh oh, but don’t worry, here’s another easy way to force quit without the virtual escape key:

  1. Open the  Apple menu from the app to be force quit
  2. Choose “Force Quit” from the Apple menu options
  3. Choose the app from the task list to force quit, then select “Force Quit” and confirm

You can also shorten the Apple menu approach to Force Quit by holding the SHIFT key and then going to the  Apple menu and choosing “Force Quit Application Name” to force that app to close immediately.

Additional Mac Touch Bar Force Quit options

Mac OS actually offers at least 6 different methods to force quit Mac applications, and while the keystroke combination is by far the most useful and probably a habit for many Pro users, it won’t always work as discussed here. The Apple menu option is perhaps the next best choice, followed by Activity Monitor and relying on the Terminal.

You can also connect an external USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard to the Mac that has a physical escape key and then trigger the familiar keystroke to force quit the problematic app. Admittedly, another keyboard is a bit silly and not really useful.

Another option would be to switch to System Preferences and reassign a hardware escape key to get back a physical Escape key for the innovative design of a virtualized escape key on the Touch Bar.

Interestingly, Apple even mentions in their own support document that the Escape key on a Touch Bar no longer functions, eliminating the ability to force quit a problematic app, and instead recommending either an alternative try forced stop approach or even reboot your Mac computer.
