Check tutorial of Give Your Mac a Black Menu Bar in OS X Mavericks with ObsidianMenuBar
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Give Your Mac a Black Menu Bar in OS X Mavericks with ObsidianMenuBar.
OS X’s menu bar has two default color choices, simple gray or translucent, which varies slightly based on the background used. None of these looks are really anything to write on home about. That’s why the third party mod ObsidianMenuBar is a nice alternative, it gives your Mac a black menu bar. It’s not perfect, but it still looks absolutely fantastic, and really, this is the menu bar that OS X should have.
ObsidianMenuBar is free, easy to install, and just as easy to roll back if you decide you don’t like it. Since this modifies some system files and is not supported by the developer, you probably want a backupup of your Mac before trying it out.
Get the Obsidian Black Menu Bar in OS X Mavericks
- Go to System Preferences in the Apple menu, then go to “Desktop & Screen Saver” and uncheck the “Translucent Menu Bar” option in the Desktop tab
- Download the ObsidianMenuBar package from the developer and extract the file
- Right-click on the “Install Obsidian Menu Bar.app” application and choose “Open” to bypass the “unidentified developer” warning
- Enter the admin password to install the Obsidian mod
- Optional but recommended: also install the “WhiteUIServer.menu” mod
- Log out of the current user account and then log back in to transfer the changes to the menu bar
You immediately see the difference, the Mac menu bar is suddenly much more attractive. It generally looks good in OS X, in the Finder, and in third-party apps.
No, it’s not perfect, and there are some quirks with how certain menu bar elements look, but if you don’t mind that the clock (the emoji clock keeps looking good) and battery percentage is mostly invisible, you probably won’t already having too much trouble with those low contrast menu items. Installing the optional WhiteUIServer add-on helps, but some third-party menu bar items are a lost cause for now.
Black menu bars are nothing new, so why bother with Obsidian? Besides the obvious appeal, it’s also the only way to get a black menu bar in the latest versions of OS X. The old tricks black with Nocturne app or MenuBarFilter haven’t been updated in a while and they don’t work at all with OS X Mavericks, yes you can tweak them but they run up buggy and probably not worth it. MenuBarFilter is generally my preference for its simplicity, but until updated for Mavericks, Obsidian seems to be the way to go.
Remove ObsidianMenubar to return to the default
The developer has made Obsidian removal much easier than before with a simple script to automate the process for you. The removal tool is bundled with the original package, so if you delete what you originally downloaded, you’ll want to grab it again to get the simple remover app:
- Right click on “Restore Default Menu Bar.app” and choose ‘Open’ to bypass Gatekeeper
- Enter the admin password to remove the menu bar mod, then log out and back in to return to the default menu bar
Finally, if you’ve used the translucent menu bar before, go back to System Preferences and reenable it.
