## How to Fix ‘Spell Check Is Not Working’ Issue in Microsoft Word - Guide

Have you ever had one of those days when you're trying to get to an important document but find that Word's spell check isn't working? Sometimes you cannot check a specific document, and other times you cannot check the spelling of any document. Either way, you can try some of these suggested solutions.

I found both versions of this annoyance. In some cases the problem was caused by myself, and other times I don't know what caused it. Maybe it was a bad copy and paste day. Normally, I can solve the problem with the steps below, unless it's a protected document. One reason you want to fix this problem is that it can interfere with Word's readability statistics.

## Try Microsoft Office Online

If you're in a hurry and want to spell-check your document quickly, you can use Microsoft Office online as long as you've signed up for a Microsoft 365 plan. Upload the same Word document and make sure your web application's spell checker works.

## repair the app

Repairing the app installed on your device may be enough to fix the problem. Here's How to do it:

Right click on Start button and select Settings. Also, you can use Windows key+I keyboard shortcut.

Go to Applications> Applications and features.

Select the Microsoft Office application and click Modify.

of the pop-up window, select Quick Repair. If that doesn't solve the problem, follow the steps above and try Online Repair.

Test if spell checking is working now.

## Check test settings

If Word's spell check seems to be working randomly on your documents, you should take a look at the proofreading exceptions. It's possible that the documents you want to edit are part of the exceptions list, so Word doesn't check for spelling errors.

In that case, follow these steps to fix the problem:

Open the Word document you want to edit.

Go to File > Options.

From the left-pane menu, select Fix.

Scroll down to the Exceptions sections.

Unchecked Hide spelling errors in this document only.

## Enable spell checking as you type

you need to turn this on feature then Word will check your document's spelling in real time and use the red line to flag any spelling mistakes words. Here's How to do it:

Open file.

Click Options > Proofreading.

Go to When correcting spelling and grammar in Word.

Check the box next to Check spelling as you type.

## Check language settings

Although you can write in English, Word may look a little French and check spelling for French words. This can happen if you accidentally remove English from the list or change the language of the revision.

Follow these steps to make Word speak the same language as you:

Open the File menu and go to Options.

Select the language.

Select your preferred language and click Set as preferred.

If your language is not available, click Add a language and select it from the list.

## Disable word supplements

Word's spell checker may stop working because an add-in is creating a conflict or is not working correctly. You can disable all add-ins and re-enable them one by one to identify which one is causing the problem.

Follow these steps to disable add-ins:

Click File > Options.

From the menu on the left, select Add-ons.

At the bottom of the window, make sure Manage is set to With Add-ins and click Go….

Uncheck which add-in you want to disable or click Remove to uninstall it.

## Check document style settings

If you set Word styles the wrong way, they can interfere with the spell checker. See how you change the settings:

Right-click the current style and select Modify.

Click Format > Language.

Select your preferred language from the list.

Make sure Don't check spelling or grammar is not selected.
