## How to Rename a Windows 10 Printer - Guide

Every time a new printer (or any device) is installed in Windows 10, a name is automatically created for it. The new printer is usually named after its series, model number, and manufacturer. For most purposes this name works well. However, you can rename your printer so that others who discover it on a network know who owns it. Whatever the reason, this guide has all the information you need to get started renaming your printer without hassle.

Most homes will likely find only one printer, which makes it easier as it's the only one connected to their system. Workplace printers are a completely different box of worms. Chances are, especially in an office environment, more than one printer is connected on a network. This can be confusing, for example trying to remember exactly which printer you have been assigned to use in the office or department. Printer names are usually defined up such as the manufacturer and model number of the printer.

## Renaming your printer in settings

Let's go into Windows settings to start the process of renaming your printer(s) in Windows 10.

Hold down the Windows key and the I key on your keyboard, or select the Start menu and select the settings icon.

From the settings menu, select Devices.

Then on the left side of the screen, select Printers and Scanners under Devices.

Choose the printer from the list you want to rename.

You will see three options: Open Queue, Manage and Remove Device. Select Manage.

On the next screen, select Printer Properties.

You will see the text area where the printer name is at the top of the window. Just click on that area and type in the name you want your printer to put on your Windows 10 computer.

Finally, just press Enter or select OK.

## Renaming your printer through the control panel

Let's take a look at How to use Control Panel instead of Windows settings to rename your printer.

In the Windows taskbar search bar, type “control panel”. Select Open under the Control Panel icon.

In the Control Panel window, select Hardware and Sound.

Then select Devices and Printers.

You will now see devices, multimedia devices and printers. The devices listed may vary, but that's what you'll see in this Windows 10 setup. Go to the Printer area and select the printer you want to rename.

Then right-click the desired printer and select Printer Properties.

Select the upper text area and enter the new printer name.

Finally, press the Enter key on your computer keyboard or select OK.
