How to Use Kodi | Ultimate Beginner’s Guide for Kodi Tutorial and Steps
So here we discuss the How to Use Kodi | Ultimate Beginner’s Guide for Kodi, and after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Use Kodi | Ultimate Beginner’s Guide for Kodi.
Kodi is a simple but not exactly simple media player. But because it is used by millions of people worldwide, we are bound to believe that it should be an easy-to-use tool. What I can say with certainty is that Kodi is not secretive. To tell you the truth, when I first started using Kodi, it seemed incomprehensible, and somewhat overwhelming to me, too. That’s probably because it’s a unique layout for a media player and a number of different features. But, it only took me a while to realize that Kodi is much simpler than it seems at first glance.
It takes no special technical knowledge, or a learning curve to understand and start watching movies or shows on Kodi. It’s designed for laypeople like me. However, I agree that if I had a little help back when I was introduced to Kodi, I would have gotten around it a little faster. Many of my readers have asked if I could come up with a guide of sorts to help the Kodi beginners speed up the ‘acquaintance’ part. So, here I am with the Kodi guide for the beginners. In this guide, I will take you through what are the most basic principles of Kodi. Here I cover everything you need to know about Kodi to start streaming your favorite content in no time.

What is Kodi?
Let me share the simplest definition of Kodi:
Kodi is a Media Player
A media player is a software that can play media on your device. Media is all video, audio or images. But most media players, including Kodi, are more widely used to play videos and audio. VLC is a classic example of a media player, which is widely used for playing video and audio.
With Kodi you can watch video content, such as movies and TV shows, and play audio such as songs.
Kodi is like VLC in many ways, but with some important differences. While VLC is more popularly used to play media stored locally on device storage, Kodi is mainly for streaming media over the Internet. Kodi can also be used for playing local media, but that’s not what it’s so popular for.
Kodi is an open-source, free media player. It was first released in 2002 as XBMC (Xbox Media Center) and, an Xbox-only application. Down the line, this tool got renamed Kodi and became available on a wide range of devices and OS platforms. Currently, Kodi works on Android, iOS, Windows PC, Mac, Windows mobiles, Linux, Amazon FireStick, Raspberry Pi, Android Boxes and more.
When Kodi was XBMC, it took a little effort to up on Xbox and requires a learning curve. Now it’s so much easier to install Kodi on almost all platforms and has user-friendly, easy-to-use applications for most devices.
Kodi is more popular as an online media player. This allows you to stream your favorite content for free. It gives you access to movies, TV shows, live TV, sports, news, documentaries, and more. But Kodi couldn’t do it all alone. It requires the integration of certain plugins to achieve that goal. These plugins are better known as ‘Kodi addons’.
We’ll be on Kodi addons a little later. First, I’ll show you. how to kodi on different devices. After all, you have to set Kodi up And up and run before moving on to the next step. So, for now, stick to the idea that “addons are the most important aspect of Kodi.”back to menu ↑
How to Install Kodi on different devices
Kodi is supported on a large number of device platforms. The scope of this guide does not allow me to cover the detailed instructions to install Kodi on all devices. That is why I will give you a brief overview of kodi’s installation procedure on the more popularly used platforms. I will point you to the sources from which you get Kodi and briefly elaborate on the installation methods. Here are the device platforms we’ll cover:
- Amazon FireStick & Fire TV
- Android mobiles & tablets
- Windows PC
- Mac OS
- Android Smart TV and Android TV boxes
The last released official version of Kodi is Kodi Leia. The older version, Kodi Krypton is still in use, especially by those who have not upgraded to Kodi Leia. However, Leia is no longer available through the official channels.
1. Amazon FireStick & Fire TV
Amazon FireStick is a very popular media device that connects to your TV through the HDMI port. This Android-based device converts every TV directly into a Smart TV. Barring a few minor physical differences, FireStick & Fire TV are essentially the same. Therefore, the same installation method applies to both.
Amazon Store does not host Kodi yet. Therefore, we need to manually download the Kodi APK file (from a trusted source) to install it on FireStick. Read our detailed guide Op how to install Kodi on FireStick. This guide takes you through the simple step by step installation procedure. In case you want to install Kodi instead, our guide will have you covered.
You also refer to our other guide Op how to jailbreak Amazon FireStick.
2. Android Mobiles & tablets
This one’s easy. Kodi is not only popular, but it is also trusted by Google. Unlike Amazon FireStick or Fire TV, you don’t have to sideload (or manually install) Kodi on Android mobiles tablets. You can find the Kodi app in the Google Play Store.
Only trusted and secure apps will be available in the Play Store. Since Kodi is here, it gives us the assurance that it is verified and safe.
Here’s how to install Kodi on Android:
- Open Play Store
- Look up for Kodi
- Follow the instructions on the screen and install Kodi
It’s so easy!
3. Windows PC
The installation process for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 and older is different. We treat both as follows.
3.1 Windows 10
If you have Windows 10, you can download the official version of Kodi from the Microsoft Store. Here’s how to do that:
- Click Find ‘Cortana’ button and type ‘Kodi’ (without quotation marks)
- Kodi icon shows up on the search results in “Start” as the “Trusted Microsoft app.” Click the Kodi icon
- You’ll be taken to the Microsoft Store. Click “Get” or “Download” button
- Let Microsoft Store do the rest for you
- In about a minute or two, you’ll have Kodi installed on your Windows 10 PC
3.2 Windows 8.1 and older
If you have Windows 8.1 or an older version of Windows, you can still download Kodi directly from the official website https://kodi.tv
Open the website and when you click on the homepage, click “DOWNLOAD” in the upper-right corner (or go directly to https://kodi.tv/download)
Scroll down until you see the logos of the supported devices/platforms.
Click the Windows logo
Make sure you selected the Recommended tab in the next window
If you have a 64-bit computer, click INSTALLER (64 BIT). Click INSTALLER (32 BIT) if you’re using a 32-bit PC.
4. Mac OS
Kodi is not listed in Apple’s App Store, but there is a MacOS version on Kodi’s official website. You need to run Mac OS 10.8 X or later on an Intel processor for Kodi to work. To install Kodi Leia on Mac, follow these steps:
Open https://kodi.tv/download in the Safari web browser (Safari will automatically mount the DMG file). Scroll down and click on the ‘MacOS’ logo
Make sure the “Recommended” tab is selected on the popup Window. Click INSTALLER (64-BIT)
Follow the usual process to install the app on your Mac computer
5. iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch)
The official website says you need to jailbreak the iOS device to install Kodi. But there are a number of third-party app stores, such as TweakBox hosting the iOS version of the app.
Open https://www.tweakboxapp.com on your iOS in any browser (Safari preference) and download the TweakBox app store by clicking on the Download button.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install TweakBox. You must grant certain permissions to the app during installation.
Now run TweakBox and Click the “Apps” tab at the top. Look up for Kodi on the list of the apps and click on the Kodi icon. Follow the on-screen instructions again and install Kodi on iOS.
6. Android Smart TV and TV boxes
Android Smart TV and TV Boxes support The Google Play Store. Since Kodi Krypton is an official entry in the Play Store, installing the app is quite easy.
- Turn on your TV (if you’re using Android TV box, make sure it’s connected to the TV)
- When the homescreen loads up, click the Play Store icon (or Google Play)
- Look up for Kodi app
- Follow the instructions on the screen and you’ll have Kodi in a few minutes
What are Kodi Addons?
I told you, “addons are the most important aspect of Kodi” and I wasn’t exaggerating. If anything, I could under-prove it.
Kodi’s monumental success in recent years depends on his ability to support a variety of addons. Of course, Kodi is a powerful media player with many features. But, the addons are the cornerstone.
Kodi is a media player, but what good is the media player if there are no media to play? Addons bridge between Kodi, the media player and the media sources on the Internet. In simple words, add-ons provide the interface between Kodi and the huge pool of media out there on the web. When you buy a DVD player, you need DVDs to watch movies or shows. A addon is to Kodi what DVD is to a DVD player.
Kodi can play videos and music from the local device store. But any media player can do that. Kodi’s true potential lies in integration with add-ons.
So, once you get Kodi, the next thing you want is addons to start watching your favorite shows, movies, or anything you want to watch.
There are literally hundreds of Kodi addons out there. Some are good, most not so many. Kodi is an open-source platform and everyone has the freedom to develop addons for. No wonder why there are so many of them. The idea is to find the best Kodi addons for the kind of content you want to watch. You can find add-ons for the following (and more):
- On-demand content (movies and TV shows)
- Live TV
- Sports content
A addon, you must install it on Kodi first. In the next part I will show you how to addons on Kodi.back to menu ↑
How to Install Addons on Kodi
I would like you to take a quick look at the list of the top Kodi addons. This gives you a basic idea about what these addons do. It will also help you choose the addons you want with your Kodi setup.
Add-on selection and installation is usually a 6-step process as follows:
- Determine what type of content you want to view
- Choose the addon that the content provides
- Find the source to install the chosen addon Of
- Add the source you want to Kodi
- Install the repository from the source
- Install the addon from the repository
Don’t worry if this looks a bit overwhelming because it isn’t. In fact, it’s super simple. When I first started with kodi, it seemed to me to be puzzling. But it took very little time to get around it.
We have detailed, s to help you install and start using different add-ons within minutes. Below is the list of guides.
Addons for movies, TV shows and other on-demand content:

How to Use Kodi Addons movies, shows, live TV, etc
Once you have a addon, you can find it in the Video addons section. I’ll show you first. how to find the addons you installed. I’ll show you later. how to Use them.
Please note that only the addons that stream video content, such as movies and shows, are accessible in the Video addons section. But not all addons are for videos. Kodi also supports several utility addons. These addons can be found in the Program add-ons section. But you don’t have to worry about the program add-ons. Since you’re just starting out with Kodi, you just want to know about the video addons you use to watch your favorite content. I have been using Kodi for years and have found little use of addons other than those related to video streaming.
Access your video Addons
Go back to the Kodi homescreen, if you’re not there yet, by pressing the back button Repeatedly.
Now click “Add-ins” on the left
Then click “Video Add-ins” again on the left. Even if you don’t click on video addons and just hold over them, all your video streaming addons will appear on the right
This is what the list of installed addons looks like
When you have video add-ins, you see the icons of the addons. In order to addon, just click on it once.
I’m going to click On Exodus Redux addon to serve as an example for these guide
Exodus Redux is an on-demand addon. So, what you see next are the categories in which different titles are ranked.
When you click on a category, you see the list of titles or subcategories directly. It varies between addons.
When I click on the ‘Movies’ category in the Exodus Redux addon, I see the subcategories such as Genres, Year, People, Languages, Certificates, etc.
There may be more subcategories within a subcategory. For example, within Genres subcategory, you expect to see further subcategories such as Action, Adventure, Drama, Comedy, Fantasy, etc.
The idea is to click through the categories and subcategories, and when you finally see the list of titles, all you have to do is click on the title you want to play. The addon will start scraping different servers and pick up the streaming links.
Click on the link and you’re all set to start watching movies or shows on Kodi.
Well, this is pretty much all you have to do.back to menu ↑
What are Kodi Builds?
When you install Kodi and run for the first time, you’ll see the default interface with the standard Kodi skin called ‘Estuary’.
After installing Kodi, you’ll also need addons to watch your favorite shows and movies. That’s why, you’re going about installing different addons individually.
What if there was a way to change the look of Kodi and get multiple pre-installed addons in a go? This is where the Kodi builds come into view.
In simple words, Kodi build gives a makeover to the standard Kodi interface and turns it into something more exciting with a new skin. At the same time, a build installs different Kodi addons for a wide range of content types, so you don’t have to install them manually.
To sum it up up, to build a Kodi:
- Changes the look of Kodi
- Offers you several pre-installed addons
This is what Kodi looks like after installing a very popular build called ‘Titanium Build’.

How to Install Kodi builds
There are dozens of Kodi builds out there. They’re not all good. Take a look at the best Kodi builds and choose what you like most. You try different builds at different times.
Installing a build on Kodi requires a bit of doing, but it’s not difficult. We have detailed, simple and step-by-step installation guides for the most popular builds. Go through our installation guides for the following builds and you get the one you want within minutes:back to menu ↑
How to Use a Kodi Build
Apart from the rearrangement of various elements and the makeover of the interface, Kodi with a build is not much different than Kodi without. That’s good news because it means it doesn’t get much getting used to a Kodi build, even if you’re a beginner.
For this, guide, I use Titanium Build as an example. All builds are more or less the same in layout, barring a few minor differences. Even if you have another build, through this example you get the general idea about how to about using another build.
This is what the homeKodi’s screen looks like titanium build. As is clear, this skin is much more vibrant and happens than the standard, dull Kodi skin.
As you see, there is a menu bar over the middeone of the Titanium homescreen and a contextual submenu bar below.
When you select an item from the main menu bar, it displays related submenu items below. For example, when I select movies, I see the related items Search, Trending, New Releases, etc.
Go ahead and select other options such as TV shows, IPTV, Sport, and notice how the submenus are changing.
Remember, I said builds come with pre-installed addons?
I selected the “Movies” option from the menu bar. At the bottom you can see the list with the Movie addons (Gaia, etc.). These are some of the pre-installed addons with Titanium Build.
When I select TV shows, the addons that host TV shows appear at the bottom.
Similarly, you will find the addons for IPTV (live TV), Sport, Kids Zone, etc.
The list of the addons can be seen on the Titanium homescreen is not necessarily complete. A build can have more addons than it can feature on the main screen. If you want to explore more addons, do it here:
Select Main Menu from the menu bar (just select, don’t click it. If you click, a completely different set of options will open)
Click ‘Video Add-ins’ in the submenu below
Here you will find the full list of video add-ons pre-installed with the Titanium Build.
back to menu ↑
How to Add Addons to a Build
A build is preconfigured with different addons. But this does not necessarily guarantee that it is always the addon You want to.
If you don’t pack your favorite build addon, you install it manually.
I told you how you could install addons on Kodi earlier in this guide. But, that was about setting up addons without the build.
All the builds you addons install over them. The good news is that the installation method with a build is not much different compared to without one. As before, add the source URL to Kodi, install repo from the source and eventually install the addon repo.
Read our detailed guide To learn how to install addons about builds.back to menu ↑
#Recommended – Get a Kodi VPN
Before you start using Kodi to stream your favorite movies, TV shows or sports, I will highly recommend you to get a good VPN for Kodi.
For those who are unaware, Kodi VPN is a tool that protects your Kodi streaming activities from the prying eyes of the ‘Big Brother.’ In other words, masks internet traffic to and from your device and prevents the government, ISP, hackers or other entities from logging or tracking your online activities.
To watch movies and programs on Kodi, you’ll need to install addons first. Most of these addons are available through third-party providers and let you stream your favorite content for free.
I do not encourage my readers to view copyrighted content using illegal sources. But at the same time, I also believe that everyone has the right to their privacy and that right must be maintained both in theory and in practice.
A Kodi VPN encrypts your Internet connection and redirects online traffic through a virtual, private server. As a result, anyone who might try to track your internet activities doesn’t. ExpressVPN is my recommended Kodi VPN because it is fast and very secure. It uses impregnable encryption technology to protect your privacy and online identity. ExpressVPN offers 100% anonymity to the Kodi users.
You use ExpressVPN on an array of Kodi compatible device platforms such as Android, FireStick, iOS, Mac, Windows, etc. You use this VPN with Kodi and any other streaming apps you might be using.
So, before you start streaming, here’s how to Get VPN protection in 3 easy steps.
Step 1: Include the ExpressVPN subscription Here.
Step 2: Click Here to download and install the ExpressVPN app on your device.
Step 3: Click the Power icon om to connect a VPN server. That’s all. Your connection is now secured with the fastest and best VPN for Kodi.

This is pretty much everything you need to know about Kodi as a beginner. Frankly, for the most part, you just need the basic functions of Kodi that I’ve outlined in this guide. I’ve been familiar with Kodi for years, and even today I barely go beyond the basics. Know how to Install addon on the device you are using and learning to set up addons and you’ve already arranged a lot. Kodi builds are great, they give a visual appeal to the interface, and make your life easier with pre-installed addons. It’s good to build. I use it myself. What I’m saying is that even when you build out the equation, you still use Kodi only with the addons. But, there’s not much you do without the addons. I’m probably going to say this the third time in this. guide – addons are the most important aspect of Kodi.
