If you need to record screen activity on a Mac, you don’t need to download any additional software as the functionality is built right into Mac OS X with the QuickTime app. Yes, with the same QuickTime video player app that allows you to watch videos, you can also record the Mac’s screen, and it’s remarkably easy to use. This is a great solution for most use cases as it is free and comes directly in all versions of OS X.

Using the screen recorder in Mac OS X

The screen recorder feature is included with QuickTime Player in Mac OS X 10.6 – 10.9 and above. Here is how to use it to capture a video of the Mac screen in action:

  • Start QuickTime Player (in / Applications /)
  • Open the File menu and select ‘New Screen Recording’

  • Press the red one button to start recording the screen activity
  • To stop recording, press Stop recording button in the menu bar, or press Command + Control + Escape
  • Once the recording is stopped, the recording will automatically open in QuickTime Player as “Screen Recording.mov”, which you can then save and use as you wish

QuickTime Player gets out of the way when you are recording the screen so that the activity is not obstructed by the application. Therefore, it is best to just use the keyboard shortcut to stop the screen recorder. Note that newer versions of the screen recorder just hide the player completely, making it completely invisible no matter how it is activated or deactivated.

There are also options to show mouse clicks in the recording, which is optional feature but if you use the recording screen feature for demonstration purposes it is a good option to enable as it makes clicking much clearer by putting the circle around it. You can also record audio if you have a microphone, or set it to ‘line-in’ if you want to route audio from the Mac to the recorded activity on the screen. To access that extra features, simply click the small downward-pointing arrow to display a menu of Microphone Options, Quality Options, whether or not mouse clicks should appear in the recording, as well as where to save the file by default.

Screen capture in Mac OS X options

If there is a check mark next to the menu option it is enabled, selecting it again will disable the entry feature. You want to choose specific options before recording screen activity so that they can be applied to the saved video.

The default file type is .mov but you can also export it as other formats with “Export” or “Save As”. So what are the results like? There are plenty of examples on our OSXDaily YouTube page, here’s one of many:

A quick note to users of 10.5 or lower: Instead of paying for recording software, it’s often cheaper to just buy the Snow Leopard upgrade, or better yet, just skip to Mountain Lion or OS X Mavericks if your Mac has this supports. The latest versions of QuickTime Player include more Screen Recorder features making it worthwhile.
