So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about iOS 7 Battery Life Draining Too Fast? It’s Easy to Fix.

Some users find that updating to iOS 7 seems to have reduced the battery life of their iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. Battery issues are often reported with major iOS updates, but this time around, the culprits of a refreshed battery power are easier to identify as much of it is directly related to a new one features and new controls built into the new iOS release. Fortunately, this makes for easy identification and easy fixes so if you’re having battery life issues, you’re not alive up according to your expectations, you can probably fix the drainage problems quickly with a few adjustments to the settings.

1: Turn off motion and parallax

The movement features of iOS 7 certainly look nice and offer some nice eye candy, but they also use system resources to function. Shut it down:

  • Settings> General> Accessibility> Reduce Motion – ON

Reduce motion effects

Note: this movement features of iOS 7 are likely to affect battery life much less with the iPhone 5S and other future devices that have the separate M7 motion chip. In the meantime, motion detection is done by the primary CPU, potentially affecting battery life.

2: Don’t use a dynamic wallpaper

Dynamic moving wallpapers certainly look neat, but like other eye candy, it uses more resources. So turning off the animated wallpapers can help with battery life:

  • Settings> Wallpapers and brightness> Choose wallpaper> Photos> Choose anything that doesn’t move

Avoid dynamic backgrounds

A little off topic, but the overall look of iOS 7 depends a lot on your choice of wallpaper, so keep that in mind when setting wallpapers as well.

3: Disable background app updates

IOS 7 allows apps to continue to update while in the background, similar to how apps work on a desktop computer. That means some apps running in the background no longer pause themselves to save battery when they are not in focus. As a result, these run feature off helps the battery last longer:

  • Settings> General> Background App Refresh> OFF

Turn off background app refresh

Turn this off to extend the life of your battery feature goes unnoticed by most people as the app behavior reverts to how it was in previous versions of iOS, which means that apps running in the background are basically stopped until they come back to the foreground.

4: Turn off location services

Location services have always been battery hogs, so this isn’t unique to iOS 7. The solution is to turn off as many location services as possible up with:

  • Settings> Privacy> Location Services> Turn OFF everything that you are not using

I generally leave locations enabled for things like maps, weather and Siri, but it doesn’t take much else to know your location.

5: Turn off automatic app updates

Letting your apps update automatically is certainly useful, but it also causes activity on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch when not in use, meaning your battery is draining.

  • Settings> iTunes & App Store> Automatic Downloads> Updates to OFF

Turn off automatic app updates

Turn off the other automatic downloads there too if you don’t find them useful.

6: Turn off frequent locations

Due to commonly used locations, the “Today” view in the notification center can provide estimates of things like how long it will take you to drive to work. It does this by regularly fetching your location to see where you are most often, and like any other location service, this can affect battery life. This one is buried a little further in the settings so it will be overlooked by most people:

  • Settings> Privacy> Location Services> System Services> Frequent Locations> OFF

If you like this feature more than you like a slightly longer battery, leave it on. But you’ve probably gone to work a few hundred billion times now, do you really need an estimate for something you already know? Your decision.

7: Quit Power Hog Background Apps

Stopping power-hungry apps such as Maps and GPS can help increase battery life, although this is less important if Background App Refresh is turned off. Still you want to learn how to quit apps anyway because it’s different now in iOS 7:

  • Double tap it Home button, wipe up on an app preview window to close it

How to quit background apps in iOS 7

Concentrate on taking out maps, GPS, directions, fitness trackers, etc. – Things designed to track you or track your movements all on battery.

8: Decrease the screen brightness

Keeping your screen nice and clear might look great, but it also consumes a lot of power. This is nothing new to iOS 7, but it is one of the most effective tricks extending battery life for almost any battery-powered device, and your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is no different. Fortunately, adjusting the brightness is now much easier thanks to Control Center. Wipe up at the very bottom of the screen so keep it low to save your battery as much as possible.

Adjust the brightness of the display to save battery

Setting it to about 1/4 of the way or less will give you the best results. If you have it at or near 100%, the battery will drain very quickly.

More battery saving Tricks

We’ve covered more general battery savings tips several times before you can read more here and here for the iPhone, or more iPad specific adjustments here if you are interested, but the general advice remains:

  • Turn off Bluetooth
  • Turn off unnecessary notifications and don’t allow push
  • Use Fetch for Mail instead of Push
  • Lock iPhone when not in use to shorten the screen-on time
  • Disable keyboard clicks
  • Turn off LTE and use a slower data network
  • Restore to factory settings and restore from backupup – extreme, but may work in some scenarios

None of these are more general tips are unique to iOS 7, but they can extend battery life on just about anything, even if you’re still running iOS 1.0 on an original iPhone.
