So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about iPhone “Cannot Take Photo” Because Not Enough Storage? Temporary Workaround Takes a Few More Pics.

Almost every iPhone owner who likes their device camera will inevitably get the message ‘Cannot take a picture – There is not enough storage space available to take a picture’. warning message at one point, indicating that their iPhone is so full that there is no room for additional photos. Although it is indeed true that the device is full and all Camera app will stop working until some storage space is freed up up, you can almost always use a workaround to continue taking photos, at least for a short while. You can even extract a few dozen photos from this, and in no time that can be the difference between capturing an important moment or not.

This is really a simple two step process so next time you see that annoying warning message on iPhone, you can usually keep taking photos for a while with this simple one trick.

1: See the warning “Can’t take a picture”? Leave the default Camera

The first thing to do is do it Camera app when you see that warning message. That means if you are shooting from the lock screen camera, well, you’ll have to give that up temporarily.

2: Use a third party Camera App

You must have a third party Camera app installed on iPhone as you cannot get one from App Store when iOS device storage is full. So have one handy on the iPhone to begin with, which a lot of people do. This can be Instagram, Snapseed, Afterlight, just about any third party photo app camera support should work.

In this example, we’ll use AfterLight to continue taking pictures when the Camera app tells you everything is too full for more photos. Just launch the app and keep taking pictures, it almost always works.

Take photos with another app when iPhone Camera says too full

If you use an app like Afterlight or Snapseed the extra photos will remain on the device, while using an app like Instagram or VSCO to keep taking photos they will be put online instead (assuming you have an internet connection of course ).

How many extra photos can you actually take with this workaround?

The next question is of course how many photos you can actually take with this trick, but the answer is not entirely clear. It probably depends on what other apps you have on the iPhone, and what kind of caches, temporary files, and “Other” space are also stored on the device, although other factors may also be at play. But you should be able to take at least a few more photos.

Interestingly, you’ll notice that after taking a handful of photos with this trick, the iPhone will initiate the “Cleaning” process of the app, which causes iOS to cycle through various apps running on the phone and delete temporary files and other caches, eliminating up some space from each. This alone can sometimes recover a few hundred megabytes, which could be enough to take dozens more photos. However, even after the “Clean” task is completed, you can often take more photos as long as you use those third-party apps camera. In a simple test I went through with this, I was able to take 153 additional photos (that’s 600MB of photos of 4MB each!) Just by using the Afterlight camera when the default Camera app told me it was too full to take more photos – that’s pretty important, but I also had a lot of cache clutter in a variety of apps that iOS was able to reclaim with the built-in cleanup tasks. Your results will likely vary significantly.

Obviously, this is a quirky solution that should only be used in limited situations and shouldn’t be relied heavily on, but at least it should work for a while until you eventually get a backup.up can create and erase up space. How many miles you get from this ultimately depends on a number of factors, so use it sparingly and don’t rely on it, but it’s certainly nice to have as a last resort. So the next time you come across the ‘Unable to take pictures’ message on the storage space, give it a try, it should work to take at least a handful of extra pictures, which might get you through long enough until you can reach a computer come to get an image dump, a backupup and proper storage cleanup.

And yes, you can always choose to use an app like Instagram or VSCO to immediately upload the photos to their respective services as well, that works even if you are within cellular reception range or on wifi and the photos don’t mind finds going to the internet. Otherwise, follow the traditional steps to quickly erase up some space from the device, such as deleting useless apps, old videos, music and other things you no longer need. In the latter case, ask yourself which is more important, an app that you can download again or a photo of a moment that happens once? I would say delete the app and take the photos instead.
