Check tutorial of Is Your /Users Folder Missing in OS X 10.9.3? Here’s How To Show Users Again

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Is Your /Users Folder Missing in OS X 10.9.3? Here’s How To Show Users Again.

Updating: iTunes 11.2.1 fixes this issue, making the Users folder visible again and at the same time returning folder permissions to normal. All Mac users should install iTunes 11.2.1, even if they have only updated to iTunes 11.2 and not yet to OS X 10.9.3.

Some Mavericks users have noticed that updating to OS X 10.9.3 mysteriously hides their / Users directory (that is, the Users folder in the root Macintosh HD drive). Besides being a nuisance in locating files, hiding the / Users directory can cause problems importing files into apps like iMovie, iPhoto, Aperture, Final Cut, and a lot more. Due to its effects on various apps, the missing / Users folder is believed to be a bug, although it can be exciting up similar to how ~ / Library is now also hidden by default.

If you are one of the people who have been bothered by the disappearing / Users folder after updating OS X, it is quite easy to unhide it.

Note that if you’ve already made all hidden files visible in Mac OS X, you probably don’t need to do anything, as the / Users folder will be accessible to you from the Finder and Open & Save windows through OS X, including apps.

Make / unhide users in OS X 10.9.3

By using the same command from chflags to hide and show items in the Finder, you can make the / Users directory appear in “Macintosh HD” again:

  1. Launch Terminal from / Applications / Utilities / and enter the following command:
  2. sudo chflags nohidden / Users

  3. Press Return to make / Users immediately visible in the root directory
  4. Exit Terminal

You can complete this process to make / Users reappear in 15 seconds or less, as seen in the video we posted to YouTube yesterday along with the launch of 10.9.3:

Unfortunately, the / Users folder will automatically hide itself on restart. Although you can create a script to run the above command every time the Mac restarts, messy up logging in and starting items isn’t really a good idea, so a better solution might be to use a workaround to make / Users always visible.

Access / users with the Finder sidebar

Another option is to put / Users in the sidebar of the Finder window until the bug is fixed by Apple (if it is indeed a bug and they fix it):

  1. Press Command + Shift + G from the Finder and go to /
  2. Drag the “Users” folder from Macintosh HD to the sidebar of the Finder

User folder in the sidebar for access

While putting / Users in the Finder sidebar works to access the folder from the Finder, it helps users who are trying to access the folder from an app like iMovie or Final Cut, so the chflags command might be the best fit for now.

The cause of this is not entirely clear, mainly because it is seemingly random and does not affect everyone, although there is some speculation that it is a bug caused by OS X 10.9.3 or even as MacObserver suggests it could be due to iTunes 11.2. On the other hand, it is certainly possible that / Users are likely to be hidden continuously, similar to how the ~ / Library folder is now hidden by default by default. We’ll likely know for sure in the near future when OS X 10.10 is released to developers.
