So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Keep Folders on Top When Sorting by Name in Mac OS Finder.

By default, if you sort a folder by name in Mac OS Finder, you will see that both files and folders are arranged side by side based on an alphabetical sorting of their names. This is great for many users, but if you have a large folder with a lot of sub-folders and files, locating folders and distinguishing files and folders can get a bit more challenging. A great solution to this is to use a little-known Finder feature that keeps folders at the top of a directory list sorted by name.

Maintaining folders at the top of a folder is a common method feature in the Windows PC world, but it’s just as useful on the Mac. After you enable the setting, the folders will appear first in each folder, sorted by name, regardless of how that folder is viewed; list, icon, column or folder flow.

To be able to sort by name while keeping folders at the top, you need a modern version of Mac OS system software, Sierra 10.12.x or higher has the capability, while older versions don’t.

This is an easy setting to enable, but it is often overlooked or even unknown at all. Here’s the Keep folders on top setting:

  1. Go to the Mac OS Finder
  2. Finder icon on the Mac

  3. Open the ‘Finder’ menu and choose ‘Preferences’
  4. Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab and check the box next to ‘Keep folders on top when sorting by name’
  5. Keep folders on top when sorting by name in Mac Finder list

  6. Close Finder Preferences

Now from the Finder you can choose to sort each folder by name, and you will see that all folders in that folder are always at the top. No matter how the directory is viewed, folders will appear at the top as long as it is sorted by name.

Compare what the screenshot above looks like, with folders at the top and bottom, where folders are scattered all over the place with the file listings in a standard alphabetical sorting of Finder’s names:

The setting is limited to the “Name” sort option, and unfortunately does not currently work when files are sorted by date, type, size, tags, comments, or the other available Finder sort options.

With that said, there are also other options for grouping folders together in Finder. Another but equally useful feature sorts by “Sort” in the Finder, which also groups folders in any view of directory contents, as well as groups other documents and files by file type / type. However, when sorting by “Kind”, the folders do not appear at the top of a directory list, although they do appear grouped.

BTW, if you’ve never visited Finder Preferences, another great one feature to enable is Show File Extensions in the Mac Finder, which makes a file’s suffix appear if applicable (such as .jpeg, .txt, .doc, etc.). There are also a lot of other settings to tweak in the Finder’s preferences, so tinker and explore the different options.
