Check tutorial of Launch Files & Applications on a Scheduled Date with Calendar for Mac OS X

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Launch Files & Applications on a Scheduled Date with Calendar for Mac OS X.

If you ever wish you could schedule the opening of a specific file, or set an application to launch on a specific date, either on a one-time basis or on a recurring scheduled event, you can actually do both. in Mac OS X with the help of none other than the default Calendar app. This is surprisingly useful feature this is largely unknown, but it is extremely easy to use. We cover how to starts specific files on a schedule, or just an application. As with a standard alert or event, it also allows you to create recurrence schedules. If you’ve ever created a generic event or reminder in OS X before, it’s quite similar.

Open a file on a specific scheduled date

  • Open Calendar in Mac OS X and make a new appointment by tapping it [+] plus button or by double clicking on a date
  • Open the menu next to ‘Notification’ and choose ‘Open file’
  • Open a file on a fixed date

  • Immediately below the warning menu, pull down the following menu and choose ‘Other …’, then use the file browser to select the file you want to open on a schedule
  • Schedule a file launch

  • Choose “Done” when you are done

Use the “Repeat” function to set the file to restart consistently at the specified date and time. These can be standard or custom recurring schedules, such as every last Friday of the month. The repetition feature is an excellent addition trick for repetitive tasks that use the same file, such as a weekly or monthly income report, tax document, expense report, or anything else that requires regular use on a scheduled basis.

When the date arrives, the selected file will automatically start in the default application at the date and time specified in Calendar as a warning. Since it uses the default app, you would have to change the file app link to adjust which app the file is opened in, or simply go the route for the alert to launch an application directly.

Open an application on a scheduled date

This is more or less the same as above trick, but you select an app instead:

  • From Calendar in OS X, create a new appointment and open the “Alert” menu
  • Choose “Other …” then find the application you want to start and choose “Select”, the application can be in the primary folder / Applications / folder or anywhere else, anything will work with an .app
  • Click on “Done” to set the scheduled start of the app

Keep in mind that with OS X’s newer ability to restore saved windows, documents, and application states, setting an application to start will open the app with all last used documents available. That will happen unless the feature has been manually disabled. This is different from using the “Open file” trick described above, which will open the specified file instead.

These scheduled events sync with iCloud to other Macs and iOS devices, and while the iOS devices will get a warning on those days if one is set up, the ability to open apps only works on the OS X side of things , as iOS does not. No comparable functionality is built into its warnings (yet). Interestingly, iOS does have the ability to create custom recurrence reminders through Siri, which suggests that it wouldn’t be terribly difficult for Apple to include this very useful capability down the road in iOS if they choose.

Heads up to CultOfMac for finding this excellent trick
