So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Leave Your Gloves On & Keep Hands Warm by Shooting iPhone Photos with Siri.

For anyone who’s taken an iPhone photo in cold weather before, you know how cold and uncomfortable it is to pull a warm glove out of your hands so you can take a quick snapshot of a beautiful snow scene. This is usually necessary because the iPhone needs the touch screen to operate it Camera app and then again to tap to take the photo. But that’s not necessarily the case, and you can leave your gloves on and keep your hands warm and still take photos with the iPhone camera without ever touching the screen …

How? Just use Siri and the hardware volume buttons instead:

Keep the home button to summon Siri and say “Take a picture” to it Camera app

Ask Siri to take a picture to it Camera app

Now use the volume buttons to take the photo

Take a photo with the iPhone volume button

When you are done, you can click on it Home button or the power button to close Camera app and hit the road without ever exposing a finger to the weather.

Is this brilliant or not? No more stormy chills, rain or snow that lead to cold fingers and hands, but you can still capture all those beautiful winter moments of fun in the snow.

Earplugs also workIf you are an Apple earbud user, you can also do this whole process from the center button on the famous white earphones:

  • Hold the center home button for a few seconds to request Siri, then say “Take a photo” or “Open Camera”
  • When you’re ready to take a photo, press the center button on the earbuds to take the photo

Depending on how thick your gloves are, this can end up easier and more stable than using the volume button since you pressed the earbud buttons of course it will not pull camera all the way around. The earplugs trick is especially useful for anyone who has one of those nice winter coats with the built-in earplugs, or even just a special inner pocket for them to pop out for easy access.

Either the earbuds or the volume button trick works on take photos on iPhone without ever touching the screen (and yes, it works on the iPad too, but you probably won’t pack any of it on a snowshoe trip).

What about exposure and focus? And lock screens?Obviously, this works best if you don’t have a lock screen passcode enabled, and if you don’t want to use focus and exposure lock. A crazy solution is to use your nose to enter the passcode or hold the screen to activate the exposure lock. You may look a bit weird touching the iPhone screen to your nose, but at least your hands will be warm!

You can also purchase specific touchscreen gloves, which seem to be growing in popularity, but you really don’t need to thanks to Siri and the volume button trick. Have fun! Because you can actually take a photo with an iPhone without ever touching the screen.
