So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Make an Invisible Folder and Hide Files in Plain Sight on Mac.

Want to hide some files in plain sight on a Mac? This walkthrough describes how to create an invisible folder on Mac features some unique features; the invisible folder is invisible to the eye while browsing in Finder, but the folder isn’t invisible to the click. Instead, you use a secret click in a specific location to access the invisible folder.

Sounds good, right? It’s really great trick that I first learned to hide files in plain sight years ago, and it still works great in modern Mac OS releases too. It’s a multi-step process, here’s how it works:

How to Create an invisible folder on Mac OS

  1. Right click here and save this transparent PNG file on your desktop as ‘transparent.png’
  2. Go to your desktop and open “transparent.png” in Preview and hit Command + A followed by Command + C – this will select the entire contents of the file and copy them to your clipboard
  3. Now go back to the Mac OS X desktop and hit Command + Shift + N to create a new folder, don’t name the folder anything by pressing the spacebar a few times
  4. Now select the folder named nothing (“”) and hit Command + i to get “Info” about the folder
  5. Click the folder icon in the top left corner and hit Command + V to paste the previously copied transparent.png file as the folder icon

Create an invisible folder

Your folder is now invisible to the eye. In some ways this is preferable to creating a hidden folder by a. for the name because it can still be accessed from the Finder GUI with a well-placed mouse click, and as I said before, it doesn’t require using the Terminal to create. It is also beneficial because it is not displayed up if someone reveals hidden files.

I would suggest burying this folder somewhere obscure on the desktop or elsewhere to further obscure attempts to find it

Just remember that the contents of the folder are not invisible and can still be found via Spotlight or Recent Items if someone knew what to look for. To do that, you have to exclude the folder from Spotlight search and then clear the recent items from time to time.

Here’s what such a folder will look like when you open it, note that the window bar has no name:

The contents of the invisible folder name and icon are still visible

I learned this in grade 6 to hide files and apps from prying eyes, and despite its simplicity, it worked to store games, movies, and photos on school computers without anyone knowing where they were kept. Believe it or not, it works, and if you have limited access to the Terminal it is better to use the period method to hide folders. Of course, you can also go to the command line and use chflags to hide folders on the Mac, but using that approach won’t make the folder accessible with a secret click like this method described here. Use the approach that suits your needs, there are many ways to achieve this and with varying degrees of folder invisibility.
