So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Manually Refresh Touch Bar on MacBook Pro.

The Touch Bar on MacBook Pro changes dynamically depending on which application is open and what action is taking place within Mac OS. Or at least that’s what needs to be done. It is rare for the Touch Bar to stop working, hang and become unresponsive, maybe even give an error button, or show a blank button that does nothing. Usually the Touch Bar will get itself back to working state once the affected application responds, shuts down or force quits the app, but sometimes you have to manually force the Touch Bar to refresh and reload.

We’ll show you how to restart Touch Bar on a Mac, as well how to only target the Control Strip section of Touch Bar to refresh that.

Remember, the Touch Bar is the full touchable strip at the top of the new MacBook Pro keyboards, while the Control Strip is exactly the right-most part of the Touch Bar display. You can target both, or you can manually force them to refresh.

How to Force restart Touch Bar on MacBook Pro

You can force the Touch Bar to refresh and reload by ending the “Touch Bar Agent” process. You can do this through the Activity Monitor application or through the command line, whichever works best for your skill level:

Refresh Touch Bar from Activity Monitor:

  1. Open the Activity Monitor application, located in / Applications / Utilities /
  2. Find and locate the “Touch Bar Agent” process and stop it

Kill the touch bar process to refresh the Touch Bar

Refresh Touch Bar from the command line:

  1. Open the Terminal application, found in / Applications / Utilities / directory
  2. Type the following command syntax:
  3. In macOS Catalina: sudo pkill TouchBarServer; sudo killall ControlStrip

In macOS Mojave: sudo pkill TouchBarServer

    In macOS High Sierra, Sierra:

    pkill “Touch Bar Agent”

  4. Press the Return key to kill and refresh Touch Bar

How to Refresh the Control Strip in Touch Bar

To manually reload only the Control Strip portion of Touch Bar on Mac OS, go to the command line.

  1. Open the Terminal application, found in / Applications / Utilities / folder
  2. Enter the following syntax accurately:
  3. killall ControlStrip

  4. Press the Return key to kill and restart the Control Strip (Touch Bar)

Focusing only on the control strip usually resolves the mystery blank button matter.

Forcing Touch Bar to refresh and reload can fix issues with the Touch Bar or the Control Strip or both, although sometimes you may have to restart the entire Mac to fix stubborn issues if the Touch Bar is not responding at all.
