Merge Contacts on iPhone in iOS

Check tutorial of How to Merge Contacts on iPhone from iOS

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Merge Contacts on iPhone from iOS.

It’s practically inevitable for duplicate contact information to appear on an iPhone or iPad while using an iOS device, either accidentally, typos, from sharing vcard information with others, or from something as basic as contacts changing their name and address , because to which another entry can be added. For some time now, there was no easy way to handle these duplicate (or triple) contact entries directly on the device, but that has finally changed with newer iOS versions, and now there is an easy way to merge those contacts directly on the iPhone add.

Since this is done entirely on the iOS device, there is no need to sync back to iCloud, iTunes or a computer for the change to take effect, instead you make the change once directly on the iPhone, and thanks to iCloud, it will automatically spread to other iOS and Mac OS X devices using the same Apple ID.

How to Merge duplicate contacts on iPhone and iPad

The feature is actually called “Link Contacts”, which may be why it is not widely used and often overlooked how to use it:

  1. Of the Phone app or Contacts app, open the contact you want to merge other duplicate contacts with
  2. Tap “Edit” button
  3. Scroll down to find “Linked contacts” then tap the green plus icon “(+) link contacts …” to link / merge the contact with another
  4. Find the contact you want to merge (a duplicate or a modified recipient) and tap the name, then tap “Link” in the corner
  5. Repeat for more than one duplicate, otherwise tap “Done” to complete the merge

This instantly merges all the contact information from the two (or more) contact cards into one contact listing – it won’t be overwritten phone number, address or email information, it simply merges all the details into a single card.

In the example screenshots, the address information for multiple “Santa” and “Santa” has been merged into a single card. The first contact to be edited is the one who accepts the merged details:

Then find and “Link” the additional contact cards, be they duplicates, triplicates, alternate address information, or whatever:

Once you have chosen “Done”, there will be only one contact person for the details you have merged (linked), in this example it is “Santa”.

The unique thing about the “Link Contacts” method is that although it does merge the contacts from the user perspective, it can easily be undone if you decide to unlink / unlink the contact details. To do that, go back to the respective contact, tap “Edit”, then tap the red (-) icon next to the linked contacts’ details.

There are other ways to do this that may be easier for some iPhone users, such as those who have synced their device with a Mac and prefer to manage the details from a computer, or those who are not on the latest versions of iOS. and thus do not have the option Link / Merge at all. Two such alternative methods that can work in these circumstances are merging addresses from Mac OS X and then syncing address book to iPhone, or merging and deleting duplicates using Mac OS X’s Contacts app and trust on the iCloud sync feature to transfer the changed address information to iPhone.
