Monitor System Activity in Mac OS Menu Bar for Free with iStat Menu 2

Check tutorial of Monitor System Activity in the Mac OS X Menu Bar for Free with iStat Menu 2

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Monitor System Activity in the Mac OS X Menu Bar for Free with iStat Menu 2.

You can view and track almost all essential system activity right from your Mac OS X menu bar using a great utility called iStat Menu:

  • CPU usage
  • Memory usage
  • Disk capacity
  • Disk activity and I / O
  • Temperatures of CPU, battery, heat sinks, memory, hard drives and more
  • Network activity and bandwidth usage
  • Calendar and time

Everything is really customizable, so you can change the width, colors, and what and how things are displayed in the menu bar by adjusting the settings in the iStat Menus preference pane. For my use, I show disk IO, CPU activity and bandwidth usage, but if you want to see everything on your Mac, you can do that too.

Here’s a little secret: iStat Menus 2.0 is still available for free download from third parties.

Download the free version 2.0 of TuCows (supports Mac OS X 10.6.8 or lower)

Updating: To clarify, the free version only supports Mac OS X 10.6 or below, while iStat Menus 3 offers full Mac OS X 10.7 Lion support and costs $ 16. Both are made by the same developers, the company just changed their name. Thanks to Valashtar for the clarification.

Here’s a look at the settings panel in System Preferences:

I prefer this method to showing the CPU load in the Dock with Activity Monitor. One because it’s a smaller footprint, two because it’s easier to see more details at the top of your screen, and three because you can access the menu options and see even more information about what you’re checking.

This is what the bandwidth monitor looks like when you click the menu bar item, it shows incoming and outgoing data, peak speeds, your IP, network location, and you can also access other network utilities from the drop-down menu.

Get detailed bandwidth information from iStats Bandwidth Monitor

This kind of detailed information is available for every aspect of your system that you monitor. If you pull down the CPU menu you will see the most important processes, average load, uptime and more. Disk Activity shows a graph of read and write operations for each disk, etc.

My only complaint is that the memory monitor section doesn’t show trade usage in the menu bar, but since you can usually feel and see the trade usage (the spinning beach ball of death) that’s not that big of a deal. As for RAM, if you are using virtual memory too often I recommend you check if your Mac needs a RAM upgrade, RAM is so cheap these days and makes a big difference in system performance so it’s hard not to do the minimum justifiable costs to make the most of it.

All in all, this is a great free app that is quickly disappearing from the internet, so if you want to keep an eye on how your Mac handles its resources, grab iStats Menu 2.0 for free before it’s gone.
