When VoiceOver is on, you can access the keyboard navigation feature, but because the VoiceOver feature is intended as an accessibility feature. There is also a spoken aspect that comes when VoiceOver is turned on.

To mute screen items on iPad when VoiceOver is on, just do Press Control + Option + S to mute the speech aspect of VoiceOver. Now for the commands.

Keyboard commands for iPad navigation with VoiceOver

The basic keyboard shortcuts for keyboard navigation on iPad with VoiceOver enabled are as follows:

  • Control + Option + H – Home button
  • Control + Option + H + H – Show multitask bar
  • Control + Option + i – Article selector
  • Escape – Back button
  • Right arrow – next item
  • Left arrow – previous item
  • Up + Down arrow simultaneously – tap the selected item
  • Option + Down Arrow – to scroll down
  • Option + Up Arrow – scroll up
  • Option + left arrow or right arrow – scroll left or right
  • Control + Option + S – Enable or disable VoiceOver speech

These shortcuts can be used anywhere. You’ll find many of them are shared between Mac OS X and iOS, making them familiar and quite easy to use for Mac users using the iPad.

Keyboard Commands for iPad App Switcher

Probably the most useful set of commands involves switching between apps:

  • Command + Shift + Tab – switch to the previous app
  • Command + Tab – switch back to the original app
  • Left + right arrow, then Option + Left or Option + Right – navigate through Dock
