So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Open a .Pages Format File in Windows & Microsoft Word.

The Pages app is the Mac word processor that is similar to Microsoft Word on the Windows side of things, and by default every Pages document is saved as a Pages file with the “.pages” file extension. This is usually invisible to Mac users, but if you send a Pages file to someone on a Windows computer, the .pages extension will be visible and the file format will be unreadable by default by most Windows apps and Microsoft Office. At first glance, it looks like Windows cannot use the file, but it is not.

Fortunately, there is a super simple one trick to open the .Pages format from Microsoft apps in Windows, including Word, and it’s all about convincing the PC that the page file is not a page format, but rather a zip (yes, like a zip archive). This is done with a simple change of the Windows file system file extension, and while it is not an ideal solution (a better method would be to simply re-save the page file so that it is compatible with Word from scratch), it does that does work:

Open a Pages format file from Mac in Microsoft Windows

Make sure to save the Pages file somewhere easily accessible by Windows Explorer, then do the following:

  1. Make a copy of the .pages file in case you make a mess up
  2. Right click on the .pages file and choose “Rename”
  3. Delete the extension “.pages” and replace it with the extension “.zip” *, then press Enter to save the extension change
  4. Open the newly renamed .zip file to access and open Pages format contents in Microsoft Word, Office, or WordPad

* Please note that you may need to have file extensions visible in Windows in order to correctly change the extension of the page document. They may first need to be made visible via Folder Options> View> Uncheck the box ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ – You can safely ignore any warning about changing file extension warnings.

That’s pretty easy and it works if you don’t have any other option to convert the file from pages to .doc or re-save it as a compatible file format beforehand.

Note: There may be some formatting issues with this approach if the page document is particularly complex, so it is best used as a last resort if there is no choice but to work with the file from Windows. This will not work to force a page file that is password protected, but in that case the file must be unlocked first.

This great solution for changing the file extensions for Pages documents has been found in the Microsoft Community, so next time you or someone you know is struggling on Windows to work with a Pages formatted file created from a Mac. It’s usually easier than going back to a Mac to change the saved file output, but you can certainly do that and save a Pages file directly as a Word DOCX file if needed.

Alternative solutions for opening Pages documents in Windows

Finally, another option worth considering is using iCloud to open Pages files on Windows, as icloud.com has a web version of the Pages app available that can be used in any web browser on virtually any computer or PC. be loaded, be it a Windows. PC, Linux, Mac or whatever. The main drawback of the iCloud.com approach is that it requires an Apple ID login (anyone can create an Apple ID for free anytime, however), but the plus side of using iCloud.com is that it is versatile and you can export directly from Pages iCloud.com app to Windows compatible format such as Microsoft Office and Word DOC / DOCX file formats.

And it might be worth mentioning that there are online conversion tools too, but if you’re going to use an online tool anyway, using iCloud is probably better because it’s a reliable service at the very least, while some third-party conversion tools might insecure privacy practices with all documents that are converted.
