Ending running apps in modern versions of iOS is a bit different than before, but once you get the hang of the new multitasking screen you’ll find the change is for the better. Not only can you use this to close a single app, but with a simple multitouch gesture, you can also close multiple apps at once.

Regular readers will remember this was included trick as one of the four essentials tips for learning some of the major changes made in iOS 7 and iOS 8, but we still get so many questions about it that we think it’s worthy of its own post. Let’s get right to it:

Close a single app in iOS 7 and iOS 8

  • Double tap it Home button on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to bring up the multitasking screen
  • Wipe up on an app preview panel to push it off the screen to close an app
  • Repeat if necessary to close other apps

Exiting apps in modern iOS looks like this:

Close apps in iOS 7 with a swipe up gesture

With a slight variation, you can close more than one app at a time with the same swipe.

Close multiple apps at once in iOS 8 and iOS 7

  • Double tap it Home button bring up the app switcher as usual
  • Place your fingers on multiple app preview panels and swipe up on them together, pushing them off the screen to stop
  • Repeat to quit all running apps on an iOS device

Quit multiple apps in iOS 7, iOS 8 and iOS 9 with multitouch

The multitouch gesture works with all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices running iOS 7, iOS 8 or iOS 9. You can stop up this way to three apps at once, or just two at a time if you find that easier, make this the fastest way to quickly cycle through and exit all running apps on an iOS device.

Meanwhile, the iOS 9 app switcher looks slightly different, but the app closing is the same in iOS 9 as in the other versions; just enter the app switcher and swipe up as usual:

The video below shows how to exit both separate apps with the normal swipe up and exit multiple apps at the same time with the multitouch trick with iOS 7 and iOS 8:

This trick quits an active app, but it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the same as the traditional ‘force quit’ trick, which has been baked into iOS from scratch and stays the same after iOS 7. For most cases, using the standard method mentioned above is more than enough to quit apps when needed, and the real force quit method would only be used when an app is frozen on the screen, rendering the entire device unusable.

Older versions of iOS also included multitouch support for closing multiple apps, but the touch targets were much smaller, making it a lot harder to reach.
