Check tutorial of Relaunch the Mac OS X Finder
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Relaunch the Mac OS X Finder.
In general, if you kill the Mac OS X Finder, it will automatically restart itself as it should. We say “general” because things don’t go exactly as planned from time to time, and in rare cases, the Finder won’t reopen itself after being turned off, restarted, or manually closed.
If the Finder doesn’t automatically restart itself after shutting down or restarting, you can manually force it to start using the Terminal. Since the Finder is essentially an application, it may be more accurate to reopen or reopen it.
How to Restart Finder in OS X when it can’t be opened again
It’s important to note how this differs from simply restarting Finder. In this case, the Finder will simply not open after the process state has changed, so you will have to manually reopen Finder from the command line.
Terminal is located in the / Applications / Utilities / folder and the following command syntax reopens the Finder.app as if it were another application:
Hit return and the Finder will open and everything should be back to normal. This works because Finder is ultimately an app like any other, it’s just a system service and as we all know it’s how users browse the OS X file system.
Additionally, as Lauri pointed out in the comments, you may also be able to use the -a flag included to open Finder to reopen without referencing the path of the entire system content, such as:
open a Finder
The -a flag attached to open indicates “Application”, which means that you can usually just enter the name of the application without the full path to the folder where it is located. This command is listed second because it may not work for some user situations depending on their bash profile, access permissions, and specifics of the OS X installation, while the first command is pretty much guaranteed to work as it goes straight to the full path.
If the above commands were executed correctly and the Finder still won’t start, you can try running one of the commands again and checking the syntax to make sure everything is correct. If the error persists, the easiest solution may be to reboot the Mac completely to get everything back to working order.
