So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Remap F4 to Open LaunchPad on Older Pre-Mac OS X Lion Keyboards.

Since the launch of Mac OS X Lion, all keyboards on new Mac products have replaced F4 with a ‘LaunchPad’ button instead of the old Dashboard button. If you have a Mac before Lion, you can reassign that F4 dashboard button To open LaunchPad, do the following:

  • Download and install FunctionFlip
  • Open FunctionFlip from your system preferences
  • FunctionFlip will use your default keyboard by default. If you’re using a different keyboard, change that setting on the right side of the preference pane
  • Click the checkbox next to “F4: Dashboard” so that it flips – this eliminates the need to press Function + F4 to get F4 (yes, we covered toggle function keys before)

Flip F4 in FunctionFlip

  • Then go back to System Preferences, but this time select the “Keyboard” pane
  • Click on “Keyboard Shorcuts” and select “Launchpad & Dock” from the menu on the left
  • Now double-click the area next to “Show Launchpad” to assign a key to it, and press F4

Assign LaunchPad to F4 on an older Mac keyboard

  • Close System Preferences

Now press F4 and you will open LaunchPad, just like on the latest Mac keyboards. If you’re wondering, the reason you should use FunctionFlip is because it reverses the key – by default on an older Mac keyboard you should press Function + F4 to open LaunchPad, FunctionFlip strips that so it only requires F4.
