So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Remove Bluetooth PAN Helps Resolve Wi-Fi Conflict in OS X Yosemite?.

One of the most frustrating issues that have affected some users of OS X Yosemite has been persistent wireless network issues. Apple has released several updates for OS X to fix the problem, but for some Mac users, they don’t offer any help, or worse, can bring new Wi-Fi connection issues. We’ve provided multiple solutions to fix Wi-Fi issues in OS X Yosemite that many users report successful, but for those who continue to experience wireless issues in OS X 10.10.2, another potential solution is available; just remove the Bluetooth PAN interface from Mac.

Why this works in some situations is not entirely clear, maybe it just directly removes the source of a Bluetooth / Wi-Fi conflict but for those struggling with the OS X Wi-Fi issues that seem to be alleviated by Bluetooth off this provides an alternative solution that does not remove the Bluetooth capability (although you cannot use Bluetooth PAN, more on that later *). This is a simple (and easily reversed) procedure, so it may be worth a try.

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose System Preferences
  2. Go to the network configuration screen
  3. Select “Bluetooth PAN” from the list of network interfaces in the menu on the left
  4. Press the Delete key or the [-] minus button to remove the Bluetooth PAN interface

Removing the Bluetooth PAN interface in OS X can help resolve Wi-Fi issues

Apparently you don’t even need to reboot the Mac, but that certainly wouldn’t hurt. When this works, the effect is seemingly instant. I’m saying plainly because I can’t test these enough simply because my Mac with Yosemite has a generally stable connection to the internet.

Note that command line users can also enter the following string in the terminal to achieve the same effect:

sudo networksetup -removenetworkservice “Bluetooth PAN”

* Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) is used for close connections between a Bluetooth compatible device, such as an iPhone, Android, or iPad, and a computer, such as a Mac or Windows PC. So removing the Bluetooth PAN interface removes that functionality from the Mac. This also means that removing Bluetooth PAN will lose the ability to use Instant Hotspot in OS X with an iPhone, which is basically just a quick way to share the Internet and activate the Personal Hotspot feature on an iPhone without doing this on the device itself, so only do this if you’re sure you don’t need to use Instant Hotspot (keep in mind that USB Internet sharing and tethering will still work fine).

You can easily re-add the Bluetooth PAN interface to the Mac by clicking the [+] plus button in the corner of the Network Preferences panel.

This trick was left in our comments and some further details were provided by IHealthGeek, which reported immediate success.

If you try this out, please leave us a comment with what your experience was and whether it fixes the issues you experienced with OS X Yosemite Wi-Fi and / or Bluetooth issues.
