If you’ve set up multiple email accounts with the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad, you’ve probably noticed that each email account name is the carrier by default, such as ‘iCloud’, ‘Gmail’, ‘Outlook’ and ‘Yahoo’. Those names aren’t the most explanatory, and it can get even more confusing when you’ve set up two email accounts from the same service provider with the Mail app, where you might end up up with ‘Gmail’ and ‘Gmail’ or ‘Outlook’ and ‘Outlook’, one of which can be the default address and the other is a miscellaneous inbox, with no clear distinction between the two. This is what it can look like in the Settings view and Mail app Mailboxes, a little confusing until you dig deeper:

Instead of putting up With those nondescript and sometimes confusingly repetitive email account names, you can change the name of the account to something much more meaningful, like that account’s email address or job title. This is handled through the iOS Mail app settings and it simply changes the user side and view of things, it doesn’t affect how the email is sent or presented to the outside world.

This will rename the email account description you see in the Settings and Mail apps, will not change the account contact name, and will not affect the outside world when sending emails. This will also not change an email address.

  1. Open the global “Settings” app on the iPhone / iPad home screen and then go to settings for “Email, contacts, calendars”
  2. Tap the specific email account you want to rename
  3. On the next screen, tap the email address itself at the top of the Settings panel
  4. Select an email account to rename in iOS

  5. Look under “Description” and enter the new identifying name for the email account, then tap “Done” to set the change
  6. Rename iOS Mail account in iOS

The change takes effect immediately in both Mail settings and, perhaps more importantly, in the Mail app itself when you look at the account mailboxes and inbox views.

This is less important if you only have one account for each provider and you know exactly what they are just by looking at the name of the mail provider, but for those of us with multiple email accounts it can be very useful and help you get started quickly. differentiate which account is which.
