So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Save an Audio or Video File Directly from the Media Viewer in Safari.

Many Safari users have noticed that when you try to save a raw audio file or video file loaded directly from the web into the Safaris media viewer tab or window, the default option of ‘Save as’ will return a ‘.webarchive’ file – not exactly the multimedia file that users want to save. This has led some users to believe that Safari does not support downloading mp3, m4a, mpg, mov and other files, but it doesn’t. There are two easy solutions to this nuisance, both of which allow you to actually save the media document to your local hard drive from a media viewing window in Safari.

While this works in all versions of Mac OS X and just about all versions of Safari, it doesn’t currently work in iOS, so iPad and iPhone users will have to rely on another option to store audio / video on their devices.

Option 1: Switch the save format to page source

The default ‘Save As’ formatting option in Safari is ‘Web Archive’, which is for downloading a full embedded web page, text, HTML source, images, media and everything. That’s fine if you want to save a web page locally, but it’s pretty useless if you want to save a video file or audio file that you have in the web browser. The solution? Simple, just change the save format to ‘Page source’

From Safari with an audio or video file loaded directly from the URL …

  1. As usual, choose “Save As” from the File menu (or press Command + Shift + S)
  2. In the Export As menu, name the file as you want to name the video / audio document when it is saved
  3. Choose the “Format” option, preset to Web Archive, and change it to “Page Source”
  4. Now choose ‘Save’ as normal to save the actual media file

Save an audio or video file directly from Safari by downloading the page source of the media file

I know you’re thinking “Page source? Isn’t that for storing source code and used by developers?” Well, not always, in this case, “page source” is the actual media file, such as an mp3 or m4a document.

If for some reason you can’t get that to work, you can use option 2 which will download the video file (or audio) directly while it loads in a browser tab or window.

Option 2: use ‘Download video as’

The other option is somewhat hidden and certainly not obvious, but it allows you to download any multimedia file loaded in a web browser window, be it an MP3, MPG, m4a, mov, MKV, wav, whatever you want save. To access the hidden “Download Video As” feature here’s all you need to do:

  1. Right click anywhere in the media playback timeline (or Ctrl + click)
  2. Choose the “Download Video As …” option from the pop-up menu

The Download Video As in Safari option saves audio or video files in their raw format

Now save the file normally and place it somewhere you can easily find it. The default location is the ~ / Downloads / folder that Safari will choose.

One of both trick works, so if you’re frustrated with the ‘web archive’ of storing files instead of the music or movie files in known formats that you wanted to download, that’s all you have to do.

It’s also worth remembering that you can always use the OS X encryption tools to later convert the media file format to something else, such as a ringtone, if you decide that the file type you downloaded isn’t what you’d rather work with .
