So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Schedule Do Not Disturb in Mac OS X to Stop Nagging Notifications on the Mac.

Notification Center in Mac OS X sends a small pop-up warning in the corner of the screen when an event occurs. These often take the form of a reminder originally created on an iPhone, a new incoming iMessage, an ongoing software update, or twenty new emails, basically almost anything. While they are of course useful for many occasions, they can also quickly become a complete nuisance once they begin to dominate any part of your Mac’s screen.

There are a few solutions to the non-stop nagging notification problems in Mac OS X; you can selectively ignore notifications as soon as they arrive, you can use the feature for 24 hours by option + clicking the Notifications icon, or you can pull out all the stops and turn off the notification center completely, which is of course a bit more extreme. Fortunately, modern MacOS releases from Mac OS X Mavericks include an excellent new option, borrowing from the Do Not Disturb feature of iOS and allowing a defined schedule to be set for when notifications and alerts are hidden and when they are allowed.

How to Schedule Do Not Disturb in Mac OS X to Stop Notifications

It allows you to set a schedule for when the notification center will not disturb you with alerts and notifications.

  • Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and choose “Notifications”
  • Select “Do Not Disturb” from the left menu
  • Check the box under ‘Enable Do Not Disturb’ and set the time schedule accordingly

The default setting for Do Not Disturb should be turned on in the evenings and at night, but what I found more useful is setting Do Not Disturb for daytime instead – this boosts productivity and helps reduce distractions from messages, alerts, and everything else annoying disruptions that can interrupt your workflow.

If you prefer ‘Do not disturb’ set for the evening hours, use the Option click trick temporarily disabling Notification Center will likely get a lot of use. You can also open the notification panel and scroll down to select “Do not disturb”.

Temporarily stop notification alerts for 24 hours

Both temporary measures will enable Do Not Disturb for the next 24-hour period, so when that’s over, you’ll either need to redial + click the icon, or address the notifications to handle them. After toggling this setting a few dozen times, you’ll likely give in and set the Do Not Disturb schedule to be done with it once and for all.

Another interesting option is available if you are annoyed by Notification Center on the Mac; schedule it to be on all the time, which puts Notification Center into perpetual Do Not Disturb mode on the Mac, which prevents alerts or notifications from appearing on the Mac unless you manually check them in Notification Center itself.
