So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Send Live Photos as Animated GIF from iPhone or iPad.

The iPhone and iPad have a little-known ability to natively convert looping or bouncing Live Photos into animated GIFs by sending them through select sharing methods.

This approach to sharing a Live Photo as a GIF is great because it basically requires no effort at all, and it’s certainly easier and faster than using an app to convert Live Photos to GIF.

Read on to learn how to easily send and share Live Photos as an animated gif.

To try this yourself, you’ll need a Live Photo (or several to choose from). You can always take a few Live Photos with your iPhone or iPad camera first.

How to Share a live photo as animated GIF from iPhone or iPad

Assuming you have a Live Photo ready to use, here’s how to share and send Live Photos as animated GIFs.

  1. In the Photos app on iOS, tap and select the Live Photo you want to convert to an animated GIF
  2. Wipe Up on the Live Photo to access additional Live Photo Effects options
  3. Send a live photo as an animated GIF

  4. Choose ‘Loop’ or ‘Bounce’ from the Effects screen, depending on which is best suited for your photo or the GIF repeating effect you want
  5. Share Live Photo as animated GIF

  6. Now tap on Share / Action button as usual (it looks like a box with an arrow flying out of the top)
  7. Share it and do it button in iOS looks like a box with an arrow popping out from the top

  8. Choose “Mail”
  9. Send a live photo as an animated GIF

  10. As usual, enter the email to whoever you want to send the Live Photo to as an animated GIF, then click “Send” *
  11. Share Live Photo as animated GIF

The Live Photo will be automatically converted to an animated GIF so that the recipient can see the picture as an animation no matter what platform they are on. Just make sure to use Live Photo Effects like Bounce or Loop.

This is great because it allows you to send an animated image to someone on a Windows or Android device, or any other platform that doesn’t support Live Photos (that’s something outside of the modern Apple OS ecosystem).

* You can also email yourself the Live Photo if you want to do a simple Live Photo to animated GIF conversion.

One thing to note, however, is that the resulting animated GIF files are quite large despite being low resolution as they seem to prioritize a high frame rate. For example, you can finish easily up 640 x 480 resolution animated GIF converted from a Live Photo which is 6.5 MB, which is much larger than necessary.

The below examples of animated GIF images were created by Live Photo conversion using this sharing method, and they are quite large in terms of file size at 4.7MB and 6.4MB.

1:Send preview animated GIF created by Live Photo by email

2:Live Photo as animated GIF created by emailing and sharing

Maybe one day iOS will get the ability to convert Live Photos to animated GIFs directly from a menu option, but for now, that option doesn’t exist. As mentioned above, you can use an app to convert a Live Photo to an animated GIF, or you can email yourself the image and save the image which will be an animated GIF. You could also use the Workflow app, which also lets you convert an Animoji to a GIF with a little effort.
